*** Lisabeth's POV ***
The melodic chirping of some birds outside my window awoke me. It was the first day of school, but I wasn't feeling particularly excited about it. The attic was spacious and decorated with all my belongings. A large stained glass window overlooked the campus with a small balcony. Vines of rich green climbed up around my window and onto the walls of the academy. My room smelled heavenly with its plants and flowers, arranged on bookcases and hanging from the ceiling. A large bed dominated the center of the room, in front of the stained glass window.
To my surprise, they had recently installed a new bathroom that looked spotless and smelled fresh. I had a wooden desk, next to which sat a small refrigerator filled with snacks and beverages; Emily seemed thrilled about the assortment of cheese. Cheese was our thing - no matter how challenging things got, I always had Emily to rely on.
Shaking off sleep's last remnants, I stretched out my arms and legs, then began to disentangle myself slowly from beneath a pile of blankets I'd cocooned myself in during the night. As I gradually opened my eyes against the bright light, I noticed something scraping against my skin.
"SPIDER!" I screamed, leaping out of bed only to realize it was a mountain of chocolate wrappers that had accumulated around me.
"What's with all this noise? It's the ass crack of dawn, Lis," Emily muttered groggily as she stretched out from her tight ball.
"I'm sorry. I thought I saw a spider. Just candy wrappers. God, just how much did we eat last night?" I asked, picking up all the evidence and losing count along the way.
"Not nearly enough, if you ask me. Plus, Luna January wouldn't have put that delicious welcome basket in our room if she didn't want us to enjoy it. Who would resist devouring an entire cherry cheesecake in one sitting? That would be like a crime."
"We ate the whole thing?! Why do you always have to push the envelope?!" I chided as I stumbled out of bed, collecting the remnants of our feast.
Emily chuckled and rolled around, getting herself amped for the day.
After throwing away all my contraband, I shuffled off to the bathroom, where I met my reflection staring back at me in the mirror. My hair was all tousled and chocolate was smeared across my face, chest, and abdomen. But on the bright side, sleeping naked meant that no chocolate was wasted on my clothes!
“Good grief woman, you need a shower!”
"Nah, I was thinking about going to school on my first day looking like I just crawled out of a sewer," I retorted jokingly with an eye roll.
“I bet mom and dad would be over the moon about that report card,” Emily snorted.
“Pfft!” I scoffed in response.
I quickly hopped in the shower and dried off. One good thing about attending this academy was not having to worry about what to wear, since everyone wore the same uniform. We were allowed to add unique touches as long as it wasn't too crazy. After drying my hair, dressing, and putting on some makeup, I added some crystal jewelry and looked at my reflection in the mirror. Not bad. Still, I wasn't nearly as attractive as the she-wolves on campus. Back home, even within my own tribe, I was considered plain.
“You look great in the uniform. Those knee-high stockings look especially cute on you.”
“Thank you very much.”
"You're welcome!"
“Alright, let's kick today in the balls!" I cheered with enthusiasm.
To be honest, I wasn't overly enthused. The fact that I wasn't a werewolf in their territory still posed a problem for me, and I knew I needed to toughen up.
"Don't forget the v****a! We don't discriminate!" Emily jokingly yelled, doing a mini-jump to encourage me.
I rushed to the cafeteria, glancing over the map Luna January had given me. It seemed straightforward enough. I tucked the map away and noticed people were staring at me and talking in hushed tones. Could they smell me? Or was it because I was new? I kept my chin up and checked out what was for breakfast. The food here looked delicious, with a plethora of choices served in a buffet style. Emily begged me to try it all, but I refused her requests. I didn't want to spend too long here.
Grabbing a carton of strawberry milk, an omelet made of mushrooms, ham, cheese, and green onions, I found an empty table at the back of the cafeteria.
Suddenly feeling exposed by everyone's gazes, I bit my tongue anxiously and surveyed the room. Everyone was zeroed in on me!
"Forget them and enjoy this tasty food," Emily said with a sniff of interest.
I nodded and started eating until someone rudely interrupted me.
"You are not allowed to sit here," came the harsh voice.
My head snapped up to see who was speaking to me. A tall, broad male student with shaggy blond hair and blue eyes stood there, scowling down at me with his hands in his pockets. He was attractive physically, but the aura radiating off him was small d**k energy. From the look on his face, it was clear he thought he was better than everyone else. Behind him were two identical short twins with brown hair and eyes; they reminded me of golden retrievers. I had to contain a smirk, guessing this would be an interesting encounter.
"Why not? Is this your table?" I asked, continuing to eat my breakfast without waiting for a response.
"Excuse me? Do you know who you are talking to?" the dumb ass demanded as if it mattered.
"Should I?"
I continued ignoring him until his hands slammed onto my table, making Emily growl and my hairs stand on end. It took everything in me not to flinch. It was obvious that this guy meant bad news.
"My name is Brad Mercer, and I run this school," Brad snarled towards me.
I quickly looked around the room to see if anyone was watching. Everyone had their eyes trained on us and hushed conversations began to emerge. I rolled my eyes before putting my fork down, appetite gone. With a determined expression on my face, I grabbed my bag and dragged it up with me from the seat. At five-foot-four-and-a-half tall, I was several inches shorter than Brad's towering five-foot-ten frame.
"And? You want a medal for that?" I asked before stepping away from him.
Emily smiled mischievously as she anticipated what would happen next.
Sometimes I questioned her mental health, yet here we were - similar in so many ways, but different in how we chose to express ourselves. There were whispers behind me, some even excitedly chattering amongst themselves, but I ignored them all the same.
"Thanks for ruining my breakfast, Brad. In the future, I think I will find somewhere more pleasant to dine - far away from your s**t-smelling breath," I declared loud enough for everyone to hear.
A collective gasp reverberated around the cafeteria.
"Better get some ice on that burn!" Emily squealed in delight at the situation unfolding before us.
I was about to move away from the scene when a hard grip seized my arm, nearly making me yelp in anguish. "Where do you think you're going?" barked Brad menacingly.
