9 THE DAY OF RESTLily woke up bright and shiny the following morning with no thoughts about what she had done the previous night. She got up, opened all the windows and gazed out the window over her quarter of Bangkok. It was not a brilliant view, but she could see quite a long way out over her beloved Bangkok from her ninth floor flat and she liked the thought that there was one less pig in it. She tipped some rice and sufficient water into the steamer and switched it on. Then she fried a few grammes of pork, a few slices of onion and six red-hot red chillies and put them in a dish to wait for the rice. Isaan people were well known nationwide for their love of hot food and Lily was no exception. While her rice was cooking, she lay on the couch, put the TV on and picked up her magazine.
