Chapter 4 “She woke for a bit.” Nigel hasn’t even poured the first cup of coffee when he tells me this. “When?” “About one thirty, I think.” “We were at Sadie’s then,” I say. “Just our presence must have drained some of its power, at least at first.” “She called out his name.” He stares down at the thermos as if he doesn’t want me to see his face. “I thought at first she was calling for him.” Oh, poor Nigel. I hadn’t thought of that. “But it wasn’t that,” I say. “Right? It was a warning.” Nigel pours and considers the coffee in his cup. I think he won’t meet my eyes, but a moment later, he glances up, gives me a wan smile, and offers the thermos to me. I shake my head. I’ve had enough of coffee for one day. “Didn’t think so,” he says. “I’m guessing Malcolm won’t want any either.”
