I could practically feel Killian’s impatience rolling off in waves from downstairs. I couldn’t help the smile that formed on my lips as I finished my final touches of makeup. I heard already fixed my hair and was very pleased with Aunt Maggie’s designer. She’d ended up driving me to some secluded part of the city and picking out one of her original designs which was coincidentally just my size. I even took her card. I’d most probably need her again now that I was married to Killian. Very few clothes in my closet would be deemed okay to him.
An impatient knock sounded through the room.
“I told you to be ready by 7.30 Skylar, it’s already 8. What are you still doing? Come on out. Five more minutes and I’m leaving.” He shouted through the door and I heard his footsteps recede.
I stood up and went to appreciate this goddess that God clearly took his time on on my full length mirror. I could barely believe it.
I had on a beautiful rose gold floor length dress. it had a low v neck that showed off my cleavage beautifully and two thigh high slits on both sides, i matched them with my gld 4 inch heels. i had curled my hair and i was just admiring how it fell down my back nearly covering the entire back that the dress had left bare. i had gotten a makeup artist to do my makeup for this event, and i gotta say...i was pretty pleased with the outcome. I took myself in finally admiring God's masterspiece then decided to go join my lovely impatient husband.
I took my time with going down the stairs waiting for Killian to stop pacing about angrily and look up at me. I smiled victoriously when his eyes finally landed on me and he stopped and stared. I could see him taking in my figure as I made my way down. He fully turned and faced me still staring and standing stock still not saying a word. I was literally basking in his adoring gaze.
From the corner of my eye, I could see the maids looking at me and exchanging hushed whispers.
“Worth the wait, right?” I said happily immediately when I was on even ground with him.
He cleared his throat suddenly snapping back to reality and settled his hand o my lower back. My heart rate suddenly picked up and the butterflies were back again. He ushered me gently to the car still without a word.
The chauffer was waiting dutifully outside and I noticed even he, looked twice at me. I did a little victory dance is my head as I slid softly into the car and watched as Killian sat much closer than he did the last time we were in a car together.
So eve he can’t turn down all this sexiness. I was beyond elated.
“See? I didn’t need your little secretary after all.” I said happily as I leaned closer to him.
“You took more time than was required. We are very late.” He muttered stoically and scooted a bit farther.
My spirits suddenly dropped at his reaction. No compliment at all. But honestly speaking. What did I expect though? My expectations were clearly too high. My mouth snapped shut and I moved over to the window on the other side and looked out the window wondering whether it was going to be a long ride.
I sighed and sat back as I pulled out my phone from my purse.
“We’re almost there. Pull yourself together. I need you to look your best tonight.” Killian muttered from where he was busy on his laptop.
“Of course.” I muttered between my teeth and forced a smile to my face.
He glanced at me then sighed and rubbed his face exasperated. He shut his laptop then put it aside.
“You look gorgeous.”
I blinked, then blinked again. Were my ears deceiving me or did I actually hear him correctly. Before I could even say anything the chauffer opened the door and we were immediately assaulted by camera flashes.
He stepped out before me then held his hand out for me. Did he actually mean what he said?
I took his hand and slowly followed him out with the brightest smile on my face I could master. He rested his hand on my back again welcoming back the pleasant tingles.
He led me into the grand hall occasionally flashing the journalists a smile and a wave, obedient little me following his lead. We walked into the grandiose hall and I was honestly impressed.
It was decorated beautifully and there were ushers waiting on us right from the very beginning.
“Welcome to the Marianna Charity Gala for Orphans, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks.” One nerdy looking guy told us as he bowed politely and took our coats.
“I’d like to introduce you to some of my friends and partners. Come.” He smile charmingly at me and led me further in.
I wasn’t sure I’d come out of this with my heart still intact. A waiter passed us with a tray of champagne and I was suddenly grateful. I took one and took a large gulp. I felt his hand tightening on my back and I knew that was first wrong move of the night. He signalled one towards him and took one for himself.
We first approached an elderly friendly looking couple that were chatting with a younger couple.
“Mr. Greene, Mrs. Greene,” he acknowledged them cordially.
They turned with smiles on their faces; I guess they immediately recognised his voice.
“Oh! Killian, dear, how do you do?” Mrs. Greene greeted him enthusiastically pulling his head down to give him a kiss on both cheeks. I smiled softly at the sight.
“And who might this beautiful young lady be?” she said sweetly as she smiled warmly at me.
I immediately smiled back warming at her affection.
“This is my wife, Skylar. Sky, darling, these are my grandfather’s dearest friends, peter and mary.” He looked at me affectionately as he pushed me forward. Mrs. Greene immediately pulled me towards herself and gave me a big hug.
“Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mrs. Greene,” I muttered politely in her ear.
She pulled me back and looked deep in my eyes, “No need for such formality darling, we’re family now.” She stepped back and let her husband give me a brief handshake.
“You got yourself quite the catch, my boy.” He muttered as he patted Killian’s shoulder.
“Then you must let me show off my wife to everyone then.” He said as he chuckled softly and squeezed my shoulder. He ushered me away before anyone could say anything more. I finished the rest of the champagne and abandoned the glass on some table we passed. I looked over at Killian and it seemed like he hadn’t even touched his. Back then when he called me Sky made unwanted feelings attack me and I knew immediately I’d need more liquor in me.
I took another flute from a different passing waitress and flashed him a smile.
“Careful.” Was all Killian said as I took another one.
“Don’t worry, honey.” I gave him my biggest smile and continued, “I can hold my liquor pretty well, no need to worry yourself.”
“Mike, my wife Skylar.” He said immediately as he gave some tall blonde guy in a white tuxedo a hearty handshake.
“Skylar, Mike.” I looked at him puzzled at the lack of any formalities.
He gave me a forced smile and I’m sure someone in the north pole would feel the hostility that was ocmng off him in waves towards me. What the hell had I done to this guy?! I knew better than to create a scene so I just smiled sweetly and held out my hand as I said, “Pleasure.”
He took it a bit stiffly and turned his attention to Killian. “a word, please.” He turned and walked away.
Killian kissed my forehead softly and quickly muttered, “I won’t be long.” He slowly followed him and soon they were both out of my sight.
I decided to walk around a bit and see the rest of the hall.
“The auction will begin in the next ten minutes.” An announcement sounded through the hall. There was going to be an auction? Shortly after I felt my phone vibrating and I went and took a seat at an empty table.
I pulled out my phone and saw it was a message from Killian.
If you see anything let me know. i scoffed and typed in a quick reply.
Ain’t I the luckiest in here today? I put it back in my purse and continued surveying the crowd.
“And what’s a beautiful lady like you doing all alone here?” I looked up to see who the owner of the voice was and they clashed with a pair of deep blue eyes.
“Does that line often work for you?”
His grin grew wider and he took a seat opposite me. “you’d be surprised.” He replied smoothly. David O’neill, pleasure to meet you.” He took my hand and placed a light kiss.
“Skylar Brooks. Pleasure is all mine.”
His eyes widened in recognition. “I thought I’d spotted a rock on your hands.”
I laughed a bit. “you thought right.”
“well, well, well…so you finally managed to tame the beast huh? Leaves more for this tiger,” he did a semblance of a roar and puffed his muscles.
I laughed heartily, “A-ha I’m sure you got women queued to get into your bed.”
“it is hard keeping them out when I look like this.” He wiped a fake tear from his eye.
He grabbed two champagnes from a passing tray and handed me one.
“A guy who knows what I like. I like you already.” I said giving him a nod of approval. He grinned and took a sip of his drink.
“So, where’s the mister?” he asked after a while.
I shrugged from behind my glass. “Probably somewhere talking about business as usual.” I added nonchalantly.
He smiled at me understandingly and suddenly took his phone from his pocket. “I have to take this, sorry.” He muttered apologetically and walked away.
After looking around while sipping on my champagne, I decided to continue with my tour.
“Mrs. Brooks?” a soft voice sounded from behind me. I turned and saw the sweetest looking pregnant redhead.
“Yes?”
“You look so beautiful!” she said looking at me adoringly.
“Thank you so much. You also have a beautiful glow going on. I’m sorry, what’s your name?”
“Oh, I’m so sorry, I’m Maggie, the one responsible of all this.”
“Nice to meet you. Beautiful event you have going on here. You’ve probably heard that a lot though.” I added chuckling. This was pulling on longer than I thought it would. I was running out of things to say.
“I have, but thanks. it’s good to know I’ve pleased many.” She looked at me for a moment then suddenly said, “I know we’ve just met but could you please do me a favour?”
I chuckled nervously, knowing there wasn’t much I could probably do for her.
“It’s not much,” she added quickly noticing my nervousness. “I was just discussing with my team, and we came up with a pretty good idea if you’d just hear me out?”
