Chapter 2: Library Girl

1100 Words
Ashton's POV:  "Well, Library Girl, I am actually looking for something."    I hear her scoff, and even though I haven't known her for long, I can tell that she's rolling her eyes. "Well, duh, but you do realize that this bookshelf is just history books. Most of them are even falling apart from being so old."      I raise an eyebrow. "Spend time here much?"      She goes quiet, then there's some shuffling. "Enough, I guess."      Okay, hit a sore spot there. I shrug it off and keep talking to her. It's not that I actually like this girl. One: I don't ever get serious with girls. The most one stayed around was three weeks, and that's only because she was harder to get into bed. Two: I don't even know what she looks like! Maybe if she would come out of that space, I would be able to judge if she's good enough to take home later. And, finally, number three: She could really be useful in finding my way around this side of town. I live on the other end, and thanks to the police finding my gang's hideout, I have to find us a new place.      "You live on this side of town?"      "Yeah, sadly."      I raise an eyebrow at the bookcase. "What do you mean 'sadly'?"      I hear her suck in a sharp breath. "Nothing, just, uh, nothing really happens on this side of town?"      I laugh and shake my head. "I asked for an answer, not a question."     "That's the real answer. It's boring. That's all." She pauses, then continues. "You don't go to Rocky High School, do you?"    I finally give up on finding an opening and decide to sit down on the floor, leaning against the bookcase that's facing bookcase 98. "Nope, and I'm guessing that you do?"      I hear her sigh, and for some reason, it sounds like it's a sigh of relief. I ignore it, telling myself that I'm just imagining things. "Yeah, but which school do you go to?"      I chuckle. "Where else would I go? I go to Central High School, your rival school."      She giggles, and I can hear the scraping of a chair on the floor coming closer to the bookcase. She must want to sit down. "I don't get the whole rival thing. I mean, sure, we have to share a town, but some people get way too competitive."      I smirk at her answer. I know what she's talking about. A certain someone had decided to trash her school's football field with silly strings everywhere. And I mean everywhere. There must have been over a hundred cans of that stuff sprayed. Because of that, they had to cancel an important game. Well, that "someone" might have been me. I wasn't trying to be a competitive jerk, but I had to do something! Nothing was happening, and everything was so boring, so, you can't really blame me. "I think that it's sometimes entertaining."    She pauses, then starts laughing. "At certain times it is."      "What would those certain times be?"      "Like when someone changed the shampoo in the guy's locker room, and ended up turning Brandon's hair green for two weeks!"      I raise an eyebrow at her while smiling. "Got something against this Brandon, huh?"      She suddenly stops laughing. It's quiet, and I can't even hear her moving. "No, nothing. Just- I just thought it was kind of funny."      I roll my eyes, stuffing my hand in my pockets. "You can stop lying to me, you know."      "I'm not lying! It was funny, that's all."      I nod my head, even though I don't really believe her. I don't know, there's just something that tells me she wants to hide things from me. "Okay, well, since you live on this 'boring' side of town, you would know your way around here, right?"      "Yes."     "Then you would be able to show me around, right? Maybe some old buildings that could still be used?"      "I could, but I won't."      "What? Why not?" This isn't right. Any girl that sees me, and I flirt with them, basically will do anything for me.      "Because you're not gonna see me."      "Ah, come on! That's no fun! Just a little tour."     "Oh, indeed, that totally made me change my mind about my decision."      "Really?" "No!" She laughs, and, surprisingly, I laugh with her. A phone starts ringing, and she stops laughing to pick it up. "Hello?" There's quietness, then the chair suddenly scrapes against the ground again. "Y-yeah, I know she's home. I was just busy, okay? S-sorry. I'll make it, I promise. See you in a bit. Bye." There's a beep of her ending the call, then sighs.      "Geez, stutter much?"      "Shut up." She says back, not even joking while saying it. She groans and starts packing up everything that she brought with her. "I have to go."      I stand up, placing both of my hands on the shelf. "What about the tour?"      "I told you. No."      "What if you tell me about this side then?" I really need her. I can't exactly trust everyone, but this girl? She's oblivious to the fact that I'm looking for a new gang hideout.      "Telling you is the best thing that I can do."      "So meet here? When?"      There's a creaking of what I'm guessing is her secret door, because it certainly isn't on this bookshelf. "I'll probably be here after school tomorrow. If I can make it out, I'll be here by four."      "What do you mean by 'make it out'?" I ask, but I'm only answered with the screeching of the door closing. I stand there for a second, then close my eyes and sigh. This might take longer, but being the boss of The Riverside Gang, the most dangerous gang in the state, I have to find us our new hideout. Everything is just going down the drain right now.      I rest my forehead on the edge of the bookshelf with my eyes closed. Everyone's counting on me to get this figured out soon, plus, I have to lay low because of the stupid cops.      Now that I think about it, talking with Library Girl is the first time that I've actually laughed and felt relaxed since the whole cop thing happened. Why?      I shake my head, then push myself off from the shelf, making my way to the front again. There's a door slamming, then the front door opens with the bell jingling. I can hear the faint clicks of heels or boots on the sidewalk, and I smile, knowing that it's probably Library Girl.
