Looking at the vast mansion covered in snow, decorated with all kinds of ornaments and lights, Millicent couldn't help but smile bitterly. She used to love decorating and everything Christmas. She lowered her head and looked at her empty hands. The ring she used to hold dear was no longer there and the man who always accompanied her is not there this year.
She was so lost in thought that she didn't see the man staring at her near the massive gates or her mother who was waving at her at the front doors. The man also looked at her in deep thought. He couldn't help but admire her ageless beauty. She still looked as good as she did five years ago.
" Milli, it's so cold out here. Come inside dear. " Her grandmother who just came out said.
" Nana, Mom. How long have you been standing there? I am sorry to keep you waiting. Let's go in. " She quickly said. She put that matter behind her.
" You child, your mother kept calling you but you didn't hear her. It's like your head was in the clouds. " The old woman said.
" I am sorry mother. This place looks like Christmas. " She said.
" It is the festive season. Christmas is in three days. I thought that you wouldn't be able to make it this year. " Her mother said.
" Why would I miss that? Home is where the heart is. I can't bear to stay away from you two for so long.." She said as they stepped inside the beautiful mansion.
" Glad you are home sweetie. " her mother said with tears in her eyes.
" It's a joyous occasion, Marley, let's not cry on this day. " Her grandmother said.
" Where is grandpa? " Millicent asked as soon as she noticed the old man not where she always found him.
" He's upstairs. He hasn't been feeling well recently. " The old woman said.
" I'll go check up on him " She said after hugging both woman.
" The first thing she does as soon as she gets back is to see that old man. " The old woman said with an open mouth.
" He's the one who raised her mother. She must be worried about him. You know how the two of them are." Marley said.
" Sigh . Don't remind me. I think it's best that we hold onto that news during these festive season. She's been through enough drama and heartache as it is. I don't want her to worry about things she can't change. " Nana said.
" I understand mom. " Marley said.
" No matter what happens, this will always be your home Marley. " Nana said seeing her daughter absentminded.
" I know that mom. And you don't have to worry about all of our problems. Life at your age should be enjoyable and you should be excited to be receiving a great grandchild. Brother will come around one day and my daughter and i will be okay either way. You don't have to worry. Let me let you in on a little secret. " Marley said as they sat down in the living room.
" What is it dear? " The old woman asked.
" I bought the property next door and i had those people renovate it for me. I will be close to you and dad without causing brother's trouble. Since you and dad refused to move in with me, i can only move closer to you. " Marley whispered.
" Oh , that's wonderful dear. But what about your career? " The old woman couldn't help but ask despite the excitement she had felt.
" I am close to retirement mother. Most of the rules have been pretty lax. Other than mentoring potential students, i am most tired up in legislative sessions rather than being a judge. " Marley said.
" They want you to run for the election again? " the old woman asked.
" They do. Don't tell mellicent about it mother. She has enough troubles to worry about. I am more worried because brother invited our cousin who will be coming here with his kids. I am sure that evil girl will bring that bastard. " Marley said.
" That is worrisome. This is milli' s home. Who can make her uncomfortable in her own house? Although your relationship between siblings hasn't been great lately, the kids have nothing to do with it. I know you care about his son as much as he cares about Millie. " The old woman said.
" Mom, he wants to see her. " Marley said after a moment of silence.
" See who? That man has no excuse for what he did back then. He chose his family more than you and Millie. I will never forgive him for putting you through that. Don't tell your brother about his background lest it leads to unnecessary troubles. Give me his contact details, I'll call him myself to give him an earful. " The old woman said agitated. Only she and her husband know the background of Marley 's husband and why they only divorced now.
" Mom, he won't do anything to cause trouble for our family. He knows everything about my relationship with brother. He kept his relationship with Millie for a reason and he was present in all her special moments. I don't know the reason but it must be very important. He is the one who made sure that our daughter got out of the divorce unharmed and he's been secretly protecting her. As for our relationship, if it's meant to be, it will be. " Marley said with a sigh.
" I understand. Your brother, i spoilt him and i regret that everyday. You don't deserve what he did to you. I will speak to your father about splitting you guys up so you can each focus on building your own families. You shouldn't have to keep cleaning up your brothers messes up. As for your father and i, we are going back to the retirement village after Christmas. You don't have to worry about us. The house next door is pretty good. Make sure you seal that door leading to this property and separate it as best as you can. " The old woman said.
" But , you were happy about it a minute ago. " Marley asked.
" I am , as long as your elder brother turns back his ways and chose to be upright, i don't mind it. But with that man in the mix, i am afraid that your brother might be UpTo something that might harm you and Millie's interest. After the holidays, take Millie and return back to your house. I believe that your brother might do something after we split the family. " The old woman said after some thought.
" Okay, let's talk about this later. I don't want my daughter to hear it. " Marley said with a heavy sigh.
