Chapter Six.
The long seven-hour journey up to the highlands of Scotland felt shorter than usual, purely because Zander knew he had to visit the Silverback pack, and he was not looking forward to that meeting, not one little bit. Caesar was becoming more and more restless the closer he got to his own pack, the knowledge that his mate was close was making him pace around inside Zander’s mind with a restless energy that was distracting. Rolling his neck and shoulders, Zander continued the long drive, trying to shut out his wolf.
“Mate is close, I can feel her!” Caesar stated excitedly, his tail wagging.
“Caesar, how the hell is that even possible? She is human, and has no wolf."
Zander shook his head at his big bad Alpha wolf turning into a lovesick puppy.
“I don’t know, but I can feel her!” Caesar stated.
Zander shook his head, and blocked out his wolf. He needed to concentrate on breaking things off with Louise. Having Caesar more than a little excited to be near Chloe, would be a distraction, and he needed to handle this with care.
Finally, Zander pulled up outside the gates to the Silverback pack. Immediately recognizing it was Alpha Zander Colton, the guard on duty nodded at him, his eyes going glassy as he mind-linked the packs alpha, then waved Zander through.
As he pulled the car up outside the packhouse entrance, Zander took a deep breath, it needed to be done, quickly, like ripping off a bandaid.
“Zander.” Louise’s voice shouted. It was strange, because he had never noticed before how utterly annoying her voice actually was, it now reminded him of nails down a chalk board.
“Louise” Zander smiled, then expertly avoided her attempts to kiss him.
“What no kiss for your future mate?” Louise scowled at him, pouting her bright red lips.
“We need to talk, is the Alpha available?” Zander sighed, wanting this over and done with.
“In his office” Louise answered, her brows furrowed together.
Zander could not help but notice that Louise was the complete opposite to Chloe. Her blond hair cut into a short bob, although she was beautiful, like every werewolf, she no longer held any appeal for him. Her light-grey pant suit and white shirt were in stark contrast to the edgy clothes his mate had worn the day he found her. Her tall, extremely slender body, the opposite of Chloe’s beautiful curves.
“I will organise some refreshments.” Louise stated as she led Zander to her father’s office.
“No need, I am not staying. However, I do need you to come to this meeting with us.” Zander stated, trying to keep his tone neutral.
Entering the small office of Alpha Aitchison, Zander bowed his head as a mark of respect. Although Aitchison was an Alpha, he was no match for Zander in size, status or power, nor was his pack.
“Zander, how nice of you to drop in, are you all prepared for the pack announcement?” Alpha Aitchison asked with a smile.
This alliance had protected him from being attacked by other packs, along with his own rogue problem. Having the great Alpha Zander Colton as his son-in-law, would offer him many benefits.
“I am sorry, I have some news. There will be no pack announcement or a Luna ceremony. Well, not for Louise. I have found my fated mate, the deal is off. However, as a gesture of good will, I will continue to offer your pack my alliance, support, and free training for your future leaders at the Crescent Moon Academy.” Zander informed them.
“I understand Alpha and thank you for your continued support of my pack” Alpha Aitchison said, attempting to keep the utter disappointment out of his tone and off his features. This was a disaster, but he could ill afford to offend Alpha Colton. It would be a battle he would lose.
Louise glared at Zander, shaking her head, then began to shout at him.
“No, we had an agreement, you reject her, I am going to be LUNA, I mean it, reject her!” Louise screeched.
Zander felt Caesar pushing forward in his mind to be let lose, angry that this woman had the audacity to order him to reject his fated mate.“
"Relax Caesar, calm down, she is just hurt, you will make things worse if you lash out” Zander tried to calm his wolf before he shifted right there in the office.
“Louise, honey, calm down, it is unfortunate, I understand, but if the Alpha has found his fated mate, we cannot interfere with that.” Louise’s father gently scolded her.
“NO, REJECT HER!” Louise shouted again at Zander, like she was issuing a command, her feet stamping on the ground like she was a toddler having a tantrum, as she pointed in his face.
Unable to fully control Caesar any further, and not really wanting to either, given Louise wanted to try to take his mate away from him, Zander growled out in warning.
“YOU DO NOT ORDER ME!” His alpha tone shaking the room.
Although she was upset, she had no right to order or make demands of an Alpha. Instantly Louise bared her neck to him, but even as she did so, her eyes were boring holes into his face, hatred oozed out of her every pore.
“I know this is not what you hoped for. However, it is what has happened. Now, please accept my apologies and good wishes for your future happiness. However, the agreement has ended,” Zander stated, his face a stoic mask.
With the Alpha tone now gone from Zander’s voice, Louise straightened to her full height.
“Well, let’s see how that pans out if I kill her.” She spat at Zander.
It took every ounce of his self-control to not give in to Caesar’s demands to be let lose. He wanted blood, and Zander partially agreed with his wolf, but knowing that he should just walk away, along with the fact that Louise had no clue who Chloe was, he managed to turn to Alpha Aitcheson.
“I hope once your daughter calms down, she will see sense. I will let the threat to my mate slide this one time. Only because I understand the shock of the news has taken its effect. However, if she threatens my mate, or hatches any plot against her when she is my Luna, rest assured all protection will be forfeited, and I will see it as an act of war between our packs. I will not fail to wipe you all off the face of the earth without a second thought.” Zander growled, then turning on his heel, he stormed out of the office before he choked Louise to death with his bare hands.
Zander sighed as he got out of his car, it was already passed ten at night, and he still had Josh to deal with. Robin walked out the door to the pack house.
“Welcome back, Alpha.” The beta greeted his best friend and Alpha.
“Thanks, man, I need a drink, but before that, where is Josh?” Zander asked with a sigh.
“Waiting in his room for you,” Robin informed him.
Nodding his head, Zander mind-linked to his brother.
“Hey little brother, we need a chat. My office now please.”
As Zander sat behind his office desk, he looked at his younger brother, who he had brought up almost as if he were his own son. Both of their parents died when Josh was just under a year old. Before Zander had met his own mate, he would never have understood why Josh brought Nicola to the pack house without prior warning, or without first having some conversation with her about the dynamics of pack life. But now, understanding washed over him, and rather than chew him out for being irresponsible, Zander decided to trust his brother, and begin to open up to him, so that together they could plan how they were going to navigate having human mates who were not yet mating age.
“So, you brought your mate to the packhouse. That was dangerous, Josh." Zander began.
Josh took a seat in front of him, the ankle of his leg loosely hanging over the opposite knee.
“Look, before you go off on one, I had it under control. Only people from the school who knew both girls were human were in the TV room. I kept both Nicola and her new friend confined to the kitchen, TV room, and downstairs toilet. Pack members were informed that humans were in the packhouse, from the school and to behave like they do during the full moon bonfire before they are taken back to school. It was just bad luck those bastard rogues attacked when they did." Josh defended himself.
“Look, Zander, you don’t know what torture it is to have your mate right beside you. To burn for her, but you cannot do anything about it because she is, first, human, and probably thinks that we are the stuff of nightmares, and second, she is not yet 18.” Josh sighed out in frustration.
“That is where you are wrong” Zander looked at his younger brother, letting out a long sigh, then offered him a half smile.
Josh's eyes locked with Zander's, then he nodded, with a small upturn of his lips.
“I knew it, Chloe, she is your mate. I knew as soon as I saw her, she was for you,” Josh laughed.
“Yes, so how about we don’t take risks, and we work together to keep both our mates safe, and gently introduce them to our world, so they don’t run off screaming in terror and reject us” Zander sighed out.
“Yeah, but bro, Chloe, she is cool, doesn’t give a s**t, will stand up for herself and others around her. She is great with everyone, apart from those who seek to lead through oppression and bullying, like Ursula. Chloe will make a great Luna, but I have to warn you, she will be a handful, and will definitely keep you on your toes. She is not the type to follow orders, and will no doubt be a pain in your ass at school.” Josh laughed.
“Well then, I guess I have my work cut out for me.” Zander grinned at his brother, then pouring them both a werewolf proof whiskey, he passed the crystal glass over to Josh.
“To our mates, and God help us keep our wolves from losing their s**t and claiming them before they are 18.”
