CHAPTER FOURTEEN Ilse sat in the back seat of their car, in the parking lot outside the junkyard. They were motionless, sitting on the asphalt with their windows cracked. The sun was still low in the sky, slowly rising to meet a new day. Ilse had moved into the backseat, in order to focus. Sawyer was chatting on his phone, his voice rising in volume with each passing moment. She caught scattered words of the conversation. "What do you mean you don't know?
