Chapter 15: A Box

The next day, Irene chanced upon Stelian, who had just returned from the royal study. With squinted eyes, there seemed to be something different about this half-brother of hers. His tone had softened a little bit. Nonetheless, annoyance was still apparent on his face. "You should just stay here." Her lips curved, forming a beautiful arch; she rolled her eyes. Her hand raised, and she pretended to care about her black manicured nails. "That's none of your business." Staying in the palace or Blackcourt City, there was nothing different. However, she would still choose Blackcourt City, where there were fewer eyes on her body. After Stefan was stripped of his noble title, those people would certainly think twice about how they should act in her presence. In an instant, his eyes turned disdainful. He turned his body and began to walk toward the exit. Irene frowned. She couldn't just stand here like a lost child, so she couldn't help but walk behind Stelian. Unsatisfied, she widened her steps, making the dark hair blow gracefully along in the presence of the wind. In a blink of an eye, she had arrived near him, almost surpassing his wide steps. Taking two quick leaps forward, she inadvertently caught the faint smell on his body; the metallic taste of blood and something else much more faint. All of a sudden, her eyes turned cold as a strange smile suffused her lips. There were silent storms brewing in her gaze. "How to go to that place?" The slightly hoarse voice sounded, making her feel startled at her own voice, yet the slight aggression on it didn't subside. The question came out of her mouth as she walked. Her head didn't once turn to face him. The silence only lasted for a moment. Stelian's deep voice was much more steady than her slightly emotional one. "You are still too weak." With that, he took a few great leaps forward, bypassing Irene, who was about to walk toward the teleportation array and disappeared. An evil fire burned inside her stomach. It took great control not to turn her body and teleport to the front door of the royal study, flipping anything inside. A deep breath entered her nose, and she exhaled. After a few times, she calmed down a bit. The foot raised upward, and she stepped into the teleportation array with slightly unsteady feet. In a flash, she appeared again in Blackcourt City. After the banquet was over, her obscure identity undeniably was exposed to the entire continent. Now, not only the nobles, who were finally able to see her face, but commoners also no longer talked with doubtful eyes when they mentioned their royal princess. It was tantamount to an announcement of her existence; an acknowledgment of her as a royal. Inadvertently not only the entire vampire race but also the werewolf race must have heard of this strange member of the vampire royal family. Thinking of the werewolf race, Irene lowered her eyes. She was sitting in a gorgeous red chair, soft and comfortable. A few maids were standing in the room with their eyes lowered. They were probably afraid that this princess would suddenly fire them. There had been a lot of maids and guards replaced with new ones. None knew whether it would be their turn next; even the new ones wouldn't be spared from firing in case they did their job carelessly. Months had passed like a blink of an eye. During that time, Stefan had been in the prison and had just been released a week ago. She had also experienced her sequelae much more smoothly than the last one, even though it was still as painful. However, Stefan's absence had lessened the chance of prying eyes, and she had also managed to drag Reyes and smuggled him into the city lord's mansion a few times. "My Lord, there's something delivered for you." Stefan knocked on the door and entered after she granted him permission. The shape of his figure had receded a lot. However, the pair of gloomy eyes remained. It seemed that his time in prison hadn't been good. Irene's eyes flitted to his figure, then the box in his hand. Raising one of her eyebrows, she nonchalantly ordered him. "Put it on the table." Albeit this man's arrogance had diminished a lot that he no longer addressed her so impertinently, the resentment in his eyes had never perished. The incident had knocked over his conceit built over the long years he was in Blackcourt City; where his status as a city lord and the relative of a duke was above anyone else in the city. He was pulled out from the illusion of seemingly superficial power. What surprised her a little was his considerable forbearance; he knew how to bend and stretch. After he returned to serving her with his new title as a commoner, this man had been laying low and didn't deliberately create trouble again. "You can go." Her eyes flickered slightly, and the cold order sounded. After her identity had been exposed for so long, she just waited to reap the result. The sound of the door being closed propelled her to stand up, then she looked up. The maids hurriedly followed Stefan in leaving the room, so in haste that they nearly tripped over each other's feet. She didn't turn her head toward the door. Her right hand raised, and with a snap of a finger, the enchantment in the room activated. Originally, she had thought that it was Stefan making trouble again. However, when her eyes landed on the materials for creating this wooden box, she recognized that it was unlikely. Although he drowned himself in luxurious life, it was hard to get this kind of wood specially created to preserve things with spirituality. So, whatever was inside wouldn't be so simple either. Tentatively, she put the black box on her lap, tracing the cold metal-like surface. The subconscious mind made her sniff its scent to guess what was inside. After her awakening, she found that her sense of smell had been greatly enhanced. She could even recognize people by their distinct smell. Subsequently, feeling that there was no hint of any dangerous materials, she opened the box. As there were no traces of forceful opening, it meant that Stefan had behaved; he hadn't been so presumptuous by trying to open it with brute force. With her power, it took only an instant to unlock the box. Seeing the things inside the box, her figure abruptly stiffened. The pair of long eyelashes trembled imperceptibly. A small, elegant golden hairpin and a few beads of a bracelet were lying inside. Her eyes lost their focus, and the finger, which had almost touched the hairpin stopped in the air. Those were Queen Adrienne's things. There was only a lone hairpin and an incomplete bracelet in the figure engraved vividly in her memory. Even if eternity passed, she wouldn't forget her strong and sturdy figure. "Mother." The voice coming out of Irene's mouth shook slightly. The hand reaching out for the hairpin retracted, and she ran her hand through her long hair. After a moment of hesitation, she took the hairpin, tracing the smooth surface with extreme carefulness; afraid that it would break with her slightest touch. The two beads were in the shape of a red rose; the flower she liked so much. Remembering that the origin of her mother's things wasn't simple, she promptly felt a fit of indescribable anger. Inevitably, the ones who could snatch those things firsthand from her mother were these figures who had participated in her ambush. She gritted her teeth in fury, and an evil fire burned in her heart. However, now wasn't the time to lose her mind. She immediately opened the box again while holding the hairpin and beads of the bracelet like treasure. A letter was laid at the bottom of the box. Irene picked up the thing. Her eyes instantly focused on the succinct message. Emerald Territory, Northern Side It was the name of a place, the Emerald Territory of Northern Werewolf Territory. The cold eyes flickered, and she licked her pale lips. Even if it was a trap, she would still go there. Coincidentally, it was in line with Kairos's investigation, which had previously also pointed at Northern Werewolf Territory. Impatience clouded over her heart, and she promptly retracted the enchantment. After she entered the teleportation array, it took an instant until she appeared again in Kairos's territory. The sudden lit up of the teleportation array startled the guards stationed there. They exchanged glances of doubt when they saw that none emerged from the teleportation array. Irene had disappeared fast, camouflaging herself from the guards' eyes. She didn't want anyone to know that she had snuck into the werewolf territory. As for Blackcourt City matters, she believed that Rufus could handle them well. It didn't take long for her to enter the forest belonging to the werewolf race. The trees and green vegetation flourishing more ardently; towering high and spreading further. Kairos's territory was directly adjacent to the werewolf's Northern Territor. Hence, it was the most feasible method to arrive there quickly by teleporting to the South first. However, it still took Irene a few days to traverse the greenery of the forest, until she arrived at the hilly area. Her complexion got significantly paler as she had expended a lot of energy during these few days. She couldn't help but bit a few wild animals to restore her strength. When she arrived at the high mountain belonging to Emerald Territory, just as she was about to snatch a roe deer to suck its blood, a few flashes of movement caught her attention. With her strength drained, she found herself surrounded by a few menacing and ferocious gigantic wolves.
