Chapter 12: Progress

"Do you understand now?" She tilted her head. "I am not as weak as you think I am." There was a kind of look Kairos had never seen before on Irene's face. It was one filled with determination, also indescribably stubborn. He realized that perhaps, he had never understood her at all. "Do you really want to know?" The usually cold countenance was painted in complex colors, representing his inner struggle. After he debated with himself for a while, he sighed and fell back to his chair. Meanwhile, Irene waited, already making herself comfortable as she sipped on a drink she had brought. It was Reyes's handiwork. She couldn't wait to check whether she could taste it with her tongue again or not. "Alright then, I will tell you. Remember that this is the decision you make yourself." Kairos said after a while. His body shifted, closing the windows and locking the door. For whatever reason she had chosen to hide the truth about her bloodline, it was still unacceptable to lie to the king. "That's fine." She rolled her eyes. "I am not three years old." After Kairos had gone back to sit on his seat, he took out a box and opened it with a key. Of course, it was no ordinary box, perhaps it had been enchanted by spells. Otherwise, there would be no point in putting it in the metal box when a random maid could c***k it open. He took out a few papers from the box and hesitated for a while before finally handing them to Irene. With a solemn look, she grasped the papers tightly, not noticing that her hand was slightly shaking. She almost couldn't calm down. Although she knew it was only preliminary clues, it was still very valuable to her. The astral continent was vast, a hundred times more than the human world. The scheme involving her mother had happened many years ago, enough for any clues to be wiped or blurred. With the help of Kairos' secret investigation, she wouldn't search like a headless fly. After she took the papers, she read them with great concentration, even repeating them a few times because she was afraid of missing any clues or hidden words or meanings. A few hours later, she finished reading it all. Her eyes flashed with cold light as she gritted out a few words. "Nothern Werewolf Territory!" Seeing her murderous look, Kairos was taken aback and was immediately pulled out of his trance. He added, "It is still unknown from which territory." Just like the vampire race, the territory of the werewolf race was divided into four: Northern Werewolf Territory, Southern Werewolf Territory, Western Werewolf Territory, and Eastern Werewolf Territory. They were the main four territories, and each of the territories was divided further, with a lord governing them. So, when Kairos said territory, he was referring to those governed by a lord. Irene took a few deep breaths to calm herself down. "You still have the habit of a human," Kairos commented. There was no mockery in his words. He truly expressed his opinion. "Old habits die hard." She replied back randomly. Kairos was silent. He spoke after what seemed like a long time. "How was it in the human world?" The movement of sipping juice paused, and the right hand subconsciously held the plastic glass container tighter. How was it in the human world? She actually didn't know how to answer it. She did bring her human habit the whole time she was living here. But what about the human world? She didn't spend too much time there. The whole time, she was like a bird in a cage. "It was fine." She flatly said. Kairos was trying to probe her. Although he was her biological brother, she had only known him for a short few years. Their relationship had developed better after he was willing to share his findings, but it hadn't progressed to the point where she'd tell him her life experience. It was a harsh truth, but the royals; the king, queens, princes, or even Kairos himself probably didn't know that she existed until a few years ago when Stelian inadvertently stumbled upon her and recognized her bloodline. How much affection could a person have for someone who suddenly popped out of nowhere claiming to be a relative? They were beings who had lived hundreds if not thousands of years after all. "You can ask Stelian." She muttered lazily. "After all, he seemed to have visited the human world a few times." Kairos' mouth twitched. He didn't respond to her words, but dislike was apparent on his face. Wow, so the rumor about their enmity was true, Irene's mind gossiped slightly. The change of topic had made her successfully rein in her emotions. Not many people know that her mother was her inverse scale. "By the way, what did that old man do there the last time he picked me up along?" She sipped on the juice again. She had been curious about this, but even if it killed her, she wouldn't have gone to ask Stelian by herself. He, of course, knew who the old man in Irene's mouth was referring to. "He was looking for you," Kairos said softly, almost making her spit the juice in her mouth. She forcefully swallowed down the liquid in her mouth. Countless emotions swirling in her heart, churning and boiling; she also suppressed those emotions, which were threatening to spill out. It was an unexpected answer. She had just said that she was merely picked up along, and instantly, she was slapped in the face. Never in her wildest dream that it would turn out to be like this. After scrutinizing Kairos' expression for any sign of joking, she still didn't see any. His solemn countenance was too vivid to be fake. "I had planned to go, but Lord Father didn't allow me." She almost blurted out a question, "you knew about my existence?", but after she thought it over, she decided against it. Despite her initial decision to treat them like strangers, she admitted that she did have resentment in her heart, and it had somehow affected her attitude toward them. "That old man did actually go." She clicked her tongue as if expressing her amazement. "You seem to have an enmity with him?" Kairos asked. "Don't you too?" She snorted. "That's rather different." The indifferent and cold tone was back. "He prevented me from smashing a person's head the first time we met. Do you believe it?" She shrugged, anger and annoyance mixed together. Kairos didn't respond for a while. He thought that she was joking. "There's no need to deceive me with a joke if you don't want to answer." Irene subconsciously touched her nose, suddenly feeling a little aggrieved. She wasn't really lying... "If you want to verify it, just go and ask the old man. You will know whether I am joking or not." The atmosphere between the siblings had been eased a lot after the conversation. She didn't say anything about it, but she could feel that Kairos' attitude wasn't as averse as before to her. Their discussion ended like that. She saw from the corner of her eyes that he cleaned the silver blood on the floor by himself just as she was a split second away from exiting the door. There was no maid in sight after she was out of his study room. Obviously, he was trying to ward off any prying ears or eyes from obtaining any clue of their discussion today. After she took right in a corner of the hallway, the maid who had escorted her before appeared again. She greeted her and respectfully led her back to the teleportation array. In a few minutes, she arrived in the teleportation array. Her body was enveloped in a light, and she completely disappeared from the castle.
