Given my introspective nature, it was easy for me to become reclusive for three days, in which I took copious notes about the area and, more importantly, about the two earth forces that flow in something like a nervous system around the planet. Being alone and reflective is my preferred state and my hosts respected my desire for isolation. Both showed a keen interest in my progress, and what probing they indulged in came over Ishbel’s splendid meals. I had the impression that their inquisitiveness came from separate directions—rather like the Michael and the Mary forces I was studying.
