Tabib abu Saar, special envoy from King Basir, was also along on the journey, returning to his home court upon the successful completion of his mission. He had two retainers of his own and their attendant baggage, which added to the size of the expedition.
Prince Ahmad looked out over the entourage and saw that all was in readiness. His young heart was eager for the adventures this trip would bring him. Turning to Umar, he asked, “Can we begin now?”
Umar’s heart was far heavier. He had just come from his home after saying farewell to his wife, fearing with all his soul he might never see her again in this lifetime. He disguised his anguish well, keeping his voice on a neutral level as he said, “I must first offer a prayer for Oromasd’s blessing on our journey.”
