The expectation and excitement she had whittled away to nothing. It was as expected, a mate that she could not have.
She grabbed the basket out of his hands and took a few steps backward to increase the distance between them.
"Go on," Elena took a breath in and held it before releasing it to say, "Reject me. I'll accept it."
"Woah hold up Elena," Ryan held his hands up and took a step backward. His face twisted in shock it was as if he couldn't believe what he had just heard. " Whoever said anything about rejection?"
"Well isn't it obvious? Why would you mate me? The pathetic daughter of the mad king?" She scoffed in disbelief as she took another step backward, clutching the basket closer to her chest. "Go on reject me, I don't have time to stay here my sister needs me."
"Elena I'm not going to reject you. Why do you keep insisting!" Ryan looked hurt, his eyes filled with sorrow as he looked at Elena.
"I don't believe you," Elena said firmly. "Is this another form of torment? Give me hope, play around with my emotions, and then reject me in the heat of it? I'm not stupid Ryan. I haven't forgotten about the things you and Tyler still put us through just because you are my moon-bound mate."
"Elena..." Ryan took a step forward and stretched his hand out wanting to say more but Elena panicked. She turned and fled. Running as fast as her legs could carry her.
She knew it was pointless, he was faster and stronger than her. He'll catch up in no time but she still ran nonetheless.
But as she got further away he did not chase her nor did he stop her. Elena stopped running and turned back. He was nowhere to be seen. He did not follow her.
This only made her uneasy. It reminded her of a game those two used to play with them when they were younger.
They called it cat and mouse if either of the girls were caught by either them or any other person. They would be beaten up.
A horrible game and the only ones who enjoyed such a game were the cats. Elena had a sneaking suspicion that he was playing this game with her.
After waiting for a while she noticed he wasn't coming so she hurried to the room where the sisters stayed.
If Elena was a healthy strong wolf, she would have been able to tell that he was right there watching her from the shadows.
"My sweet Elena, my suspicions from back then were right. You are my mate." Ryan whispered expressionlessly to himself as he watched her back disappear from his sight.
Then he disappeared from where he hid and went to the edge of the dominant alpha pack house.
'Tyler come out!' Ryan called out from a mind linked to Tyler. 'I was right.'
'About?' Tyler responded leisurely. Tyler glance out his window and saw Ryan staring into the sky. Tyler opened his window and jumped down landing on his feet.
"What's up?" Tyler asked as he walked past the boundary to Ryan's side.
"Elena is my mate," Ryan confessed with a sigh.
"No s**t," Tyler exclaimed in surprise. "Then that could only mean Isabelle might be mine."
"I found it fishy back then. Why would we be sent away as heirs to our respected positions?" Ryan mumbled kicking a stone near his feet in frustration.
"They make us reject them." Tyler sighed. "In my opinion, it's better that way. I don't want to be with that scum. My position will be stripped."
"So we agree then." Ryan looked at his friend and stated. "Are you going to see her?"
"Why should I?" Tyler had a look of disgust when he thought of seeing Isabelle. "Didn't you learn of what their father did? The truth is worse than anyone could have possibly thought. My father was too merciful, he should have killed those two then and there."
"If you aren't going to see her then I think I'll play a game with mine," Ryan smirked.
"Good luck then," Tyler looked at Ryan and shook his head. "Just don't play too hard, you might fall down the rabbit hole."
"A wolf down a rabbit hole, such a thing never happened before." Ryan chuckled. "Anyway, I'll catch you up more about it later. I gotta give my little mate a present tomorrow."
Ryan turned and left leaving Tyler standing there with his hands folded. It was only when Ryan was out of sight did Tyler break his persona.
'f**k,' Tyler swore in his mind as he rubbed his temples. 'No, I can't think negatively. Maybe she's not my mate. There is a possibility but it's small.'
Tyler glanced up at the sky, the new moon was tonight but that didn't stop the night sky from being bright.
'I hope she's not my mate,' Tyler closed his eyes and prayed. 'They don't deserve to suffer like this just because of who their father was.'
Tyler had different views on the matter. He didn't think that Isabelle and Elena had to suffer so much because of who their father was.
In his years away he learned many things, back when he was a child, all he ever did was mirror the adults.
But as they were sent away, he learned something or maybe it could be said it was entirely by accident he overheard something that shifted his impression of the sisters.
What he heard changed his view about his father also. His father wasn't a hero that emancipated the werewolf race from a mad tyrant.
The more digging he did about the matters of that year, the more unanswered questions came up. Everything was either destroyed or recorded differently.
What was the truth and what were lies? His questions would go unanswered as he couldn't ask too many questions about it and he couldn't show he pitied the girls. All he could do was pray to the goddess that she wasn't his mate.
Though he pitied them, he would not extend his hand to help as it was the stupidest thing he could ever do.
He could only hope that Ryan's little game with Elena would not be too damaging to her.
