Chapter 19: The pair from Venice was led to the third floor of the castle. The higher they climbed the stairs, the more dying light filtered into the structure. The old man navigated the dark stairs and halls without any source of light. His eyes must have been accustomed to the dark or the route memorized. Little had been done to the inside of the structure for many years. The dust lay thick on most surfaces. Even places that should be touched in normal travel were covered in a fine powder of soil. The building needed a first-class cleaning. The filtered light played tricks on the vision. Thaddeus swore he spotted movement out of the corner of his eye. The shadows did not rest easy, but when he focused his gaze on the movement, he found nothing. He would not be surprised to learn somet
