Chapter 4 - Alexander
Preparations for Summer Solstice were going on as planned, so I reviewed some papers from work in my room before lunch.
Someone knocked on my door, and just by the smell of them, I knew it was Phillip who was on the other side, so I just told him to come in.
"Hey, Alex! Alpha asked to tell you he wants to see you in his office," Phillip told me from the door without entering the room, making me imagine that there was a certain urgency in his words.
Without delay, I just got up and headed toward Alpha's office with Phillip following me, which was not unusual since, besides my best friend, he also had an Alpha and Beta bond with me.
Even before I could knock on the door, I heard Alpha's voice telling me I could come in. And he was in there... Alpha Joseph sat at his desk in front of some documents, and his Beta, Ryan, stood beside him.
"Do you wanted to see me, Alpha?"
"Yes, Alexander." He told, looking at me. "I hope I'm not disturbing you at all."
"No at all, Alpha."
"Alpha... Alpha..." His voice was shallow and carried an air of sadness with it. "You know this title will soon be yours, don't you?"
His question left me speechless...
It was true that every day I could feel that I was becoming stronger, more and more an Alpha like him. But I didn't believe that the time for me to rule the pack was already coming, after all...
Unlike other werewolves my age, I still couldn't hear the heartbeats of my Mate. What made it impossible for me to meet or recognize her even if she was standing before me.
"With all of Alpha's respect, I think it's still a few years before I can take that title." Carefully with my words, I answered. "I mean, I still can't even feel my mate... I think it's a sign that I still needing to mature a little before taking such responsibility."
"Yes... That's true. You still have to mature a little more before Destiny allows you to find her." He commented with a smile on his face that briefly became visible on his Beta's face as well. "However, you also know that this doesn't affect the fact that you'll take on the pack as a new leader or that you are becoming an Alpha faster each day... Only the fact that Phillip is naturally accompanying you here and that he is by your side in silence proves that he has already accepted you as Alpha and no longer see me in such a way."
I looked quickly at Phillip, and I could see that he too had been taken by surprise by Alpha Joseph's words, however...
It was true what he said; I could see at the moment that although Phillip was 'by my side,' this time, there was something different...
He was two steps behind me... Which was a position that the Betas assumed naturally with their Alphas?
"Wh- When did you notice?" I asked him, still kind of lost with this new information.
"Alex, don't forget that I'm still Mingan's Alpha," He told me with a smile on his face that soon changed to a serious face before continuing what he was talking about. "As you know, years ago, I ended up losing my mate before I even knew them... That fact, plus my age, is getting me weaker each day, making me believe that this will be the last solstice I will spend as your Alpha. I recommend that you make the most of today's festivities, as it will most likely be the last one you will have without being responsible for everything that happens in Mingan."
... A few hours have passed since my conversation with Alpha Joseph...
Even though he told me to take advantage of today, his words continued to come back to my mind in an unauthorized way... Making me flee from the summer Solstice festivities, finding myself in front of a stream that passed through the eastern side of our territory.
I had run up here in my wolf form, and at the moment, I found myself wearing only my shorts with a whiskey bottle that had been difficult to bring as a wolf without breaking.
It was already tasteless in my hand and the fact that I had forgotten to bring Wolfsbane to mix with it, which would allow it to have the same effect on me as it had on humans... Made the drink completely useless for me right now.
"Wow! I didn't know you drink." A voice that I easily recognized as Penelope's had interrupted my thoughts.
"What are you doing here, Penelope?"
"I don't know..." She replied, naturally sitting down next to me and placed her feet in the stream. "Probably the same as you? Running away from the party."
"I'm not running away from the party," I replied, even though it was a lie and she was right. "I just wanted to be alone to think about a few things."
"What things?" She quickly questioned me, and this was an old habit of hers.
"..." I ended up sighing first before answering her. After all, I wasn't sure if that was something I could tell her. "Today, the Alpha told me that it would probably be the last solstice he'll lead the Pack..."
"... I know ..." This time, her answer was slow and sad.
"Did he tell you?"
"No..." She said, shaking her head in no. "But I can feel that with each passing day, his powers are dwindling."
"How is this possible? Only the dominant wolves can notice this, and you are-"
"I'm an Omega?" She finished my sentence with a questioning air. "I don't know how it's possible, but I can feel it in my bond with him. Sometimes, I suppose maybe it's because of you being my mate or something like that."
... Her mate?...
... Now I remember why I had stop talk to Penelope in recent years...
