“Honestly, I’m so hungry I could probably eat a horse. I don’t want room service though,” she said. “Since I’ve been back, I’ve been craving fast food. You have similar franchises in America, but somehow it just tastes better in Guyana.”
“Okay, then. What do you want specifically? I’ll call and place the order and have it delivered.”
“I’d like a chicken burger from Churches Chicken; two servings of chicken nuggets from Royal Castle; two large servings of fries from Popeyes and a large chocolate milkshake from Demico’s Qik Serve,” she answered sheepishly.
“Oh, and you can add whatever you want to my order,” she concluded.
Mark stood shocked for a moment before he began laughing hysterically.
“Oh my God!” he said between wheezes, “I’d actually forgotten what a huge appetite you have. No salads for my wife.”
“Hey, I eat salads… as a side dish.”
“Babe!” he said hands up. “I’m not judging you. I actually like the fact that you have an appetite, and trust me, whatever you eat goes in all the right places.”
Ignoring his compliment, Jessica said “why don’t you hand me the phone and I’ll place the order while you take a shower? Just tell me what you’d like me to order for you.”
“Sounds like a plan. As for what I want, just order the same for me. I trust your judgment and I’d like to try everything you just mentioned. You’ve actually made me hungry. So tell them there is an extra tip if they hurry.”
With that, he handed her the phone and left to take his shower.
Mark left to take his shower and Jessica laid on the couch for a few minutes just staring at the cordless landline phone in her hand. The sight of Mark’s firm ass in those jeans as he exited the room was on repeat in her mind. She wondered what it would feel like to the touch.
Coming out of her daydream, she placed the necessary order and was told everything would be delivered in thirty minutes. By her calculations, Mark would be finished with his shower and able to answer the door when the delivery guys got here. She didn’t think he would appreciate her answering the door in just a t-shirt. And quite frankly, she didn’t feel like getting up from her comfy spot on the couch to answer the door much less dress appropriately to do so.
To kill the time while she waited for both the food and the reappearance of her husband, Jessica surfed the various channels on television. She was mildly surprised to notice that not much had changed during the five years she’d been gone.
Unfortunately, she wasn’t interested in watching anything that was currently on. As such, she grabbed her cellular phone which Mark had thoughtfully placed on the side table near the couch and began searching for new release movies she might be interested in viewing.
She couldn’t remember the last time she’d sat and watched a movie and felt now was the perfect time since there wasn’t much else of anything she could be doing.
As she went through the 2018 list of movies available for viewing, she couldn’t help exclaiming giddily over the fact that two of her favourite actors had movies out.
“No way! How did I not know Black Panther was out? I love Chadwick Boseman! And when did Denzel decide to make a sequel to Equalizer? This definitely calls for a movie marathon! Yaay!” she said into the empty room, or so she thought.
“What’s got you so excited? Did the food arrive?” Mark questioned from the doorway.
“No, the food is not here yet. It should be here any minute now though,” was Jessica’s reply.
“Well if you’re not excited over the food, what has got you practically bouncing on the couch?”
“I was surfing the channels earlier and nothing appealed to me. So I decided to look up a movie to watch while we eat.”
“Since I’ll be sharing this meal with you, do I get a vote in what we watch?” Mark said as he made his way into the living room.
His hair was still damp from his shower and his blue eyes sparkled with mirth. He had his panty-melting smile on his face.
Jessica’s eyes involuntarily roamed lower and got huge when she realized he’d only dressed in sweat pants. His fabulous six-pack abs were on display. The food she’d ordered was practically forgotten as she found herself once again wishing he was on the menu.
What she wouldn’t give for a chance to lick his hairless abs and circle his pink n*****s with her tongue.
And by the way, his private part was moving within the sweat pants, she surmised he’d forgone wearing any boxer briefs. Talk about a delicious treat.
Yum… yum.
“Jess?”
“Sorry, what was the question?”
“Are you okay? You look a little peaked. Is your heading still hurting? Do you need some more pain meds? I can get it for you,” he said, concern evident in his voice.
Shaking her head in the negative, Jessica said “no, I’m fine. I just zoned out for a minute so I didn’t hear your question.”
“Okay. Let me know if you need the meds,” he stated as he sat on the couch next to her and raised her feet placing them on his thighs. She wasn't sure if he was aware of his actions, but he started to absent-mindedly massage her feet and she was all for it. His hands felt heavenly.
“To repeat my earlier question, I was asking if I get a vote in the movie we watch.”
“Kinda,” she remarked shrugging.
“Kinda?”
“Well, I’ve narrow the list down to a few I want to watch, so you can choose what we watch first from that list since I’m planning to binge-watch them all tonight.”
“I’m afraid to ask, but how long is this list and what kind of movies made it to the list?”
Let’s see,” she said scrolling through her phone once more. “There is Equalizer 2 with Denzel Washington, Black Panther with Chadwick Boseman, Creed 2 with Michael B. Jordan and Den of Thieves with Gerard Butler.”
“Whoa, those are all action movies. No romantic comedies or just plain comedies in the line-up? What about a drama? Or even a horror?”
“Mark, stop acting like it's only now you know I’m into action movies.”
“Yeah, I know you like action, but sometimes it’s good to try new things.”
“I’m not about to listen to this. Are you going to choose from my list or not? You can always eat alone,” was her reply.
“When you put it like that… let’s watch Den of Thieves. Gerard Butler is great and I’m not about to sit through an entire movie of you drooling over the main lead, so no to the others.”
“Little do you know, I’m an equal opportunity drool-er. I happen to think Gerard Butler is hot and will be drooling over him.”
“Oh, I wondered…” Mark began but didn’t finish his statement.
“What did you wonder?” Jessica prompted.
“Well you agreed to my marriage of convenience, but I’ve always wondered what your type in men was. I’ve mostly seen you drool over Black celebrities.”
“I’ve never really given it much thought or focused on one particular ethnicity, to be honest. I do find a lot of black celebrities hot though Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Michael Ealy, Drake… Idris Elba to name a few.”
“That’s my point.”
“You didn’t let me finish. It really doesn't matter what race the guy is, once he is hot. Simu Liu, Choi Minho, Remy Hii, Aryan Khan and Henry Golding are all really hot Asians. I like white celebrities too: Joseph Morgan, Jensen Ackles, Matt Damon, and Jason Mamoa. AND how can I forget Chris Hemsworth – I mean you can thank Chris for me agreeing to marry you. You both have gorgeous blue eyes and a body that women go ga-ga over.”
Before Mark could respond to her revelation, the doorbell rang.
“That must be the delivery guys,” Jessica said stating the obvious. “Remember to tip them well, they kept their promise and got here in record time.”
Mark reluctantly got up from the couch and went to answer the door. He’d really wanted to continue exploring that avenue of conversation with Jessica but he knew he’d just missed his opportunity. He was ninety-eight percent positive that when he returned with the food Jess would want to do nothing but inhale her order.
But her admission of being attracted to white guys and more so comparing him to the heartthrob Chris Hemsworth gave him renewed hope.
It gave him a LOT of hope and confirmed once more that she was indeed attracted to him. When he’d seen her with the tour guide, he’d had a moment of doubt. She and Dwayne had so much more in common; he’d thought he might actually lose her to him. Jess may not remember, but she’d once confessed to him while they were in college of her crush on the basketball player in Secondary School. He didn’t like the idea of her spending too much time with the tour guide and rekindling old feelings. That’s partly why he’d tried to thwart their date. The other part was he didn't like the idea of her dating anyone besides him.
For the next few days before they left for the Berbice River and her nature resort, he’d have to keep her preoccupied in the hotel room and away from Dwayne.
Grabbing his wallet off the side table near the entrance to the door, Mark collected their meal and generously tipped the delivery guys while thanking them for their prompt service.
He didn’t quite realize how hungry he was until his stomach started growling from the delicious aromas wafting up from the take out bags.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d think we ordered enough to feed a family of six,” he said re-entering the room with his hands laden down with their food order.
“Nah, that’s not a lot of food. You’ll be surprised by how fast we put most of it away,” Jessica said, sitting up to make space on the coffee table for the food.
“Oh, my God” Jessica said inhaling, “everything smells so delicious. I can’t remember when last I had any of this!”
Looking at the feast lain out before her, she added “I don’t even know what to try first!”
Rifting through the take out bag, she produced a tub of green looking sauce. Opening it, she dipped a chicken nugget and offered it to Mark. “You’ve got to try this.”
Instead of taking it, Mark opened his mouth for her to put it in. She hesitated for a second before doing as he silently commanded. He took the offering and grabbed her hand, licking the sauce that had dripped down her finger.
It was very erotic. Who knew eating fast food with one’s spouse could be erotic.
With that, they forgot about the movie they’d planned on watching and proceeded to feed each other. Jessica remarked on each dish highlighting what she liked about each and why she’d ordered what she ordered from the different places instead of from one fast food joint. They ate and laughed and talked about anything and everything under the sun.
The only thing they didn’t talk about was their marriage, the impending divorce, Veronica, his mother or what they were going to do moving forward. Basically, they did not talk about any of the tough topics as neither of them wanted to raise those topics and spoil the lovely ambient atmosphere they’d found themselves in.
It was around three o’clock in the morning when they both fell asleep in each other’s arms on the couch.
They never made it to bed.
