“Very good, my Lady.” Romara and Caryl hurried up the stairs. It was just after noon, which was the servants’ luncheon time. Mrs. Fellows and the housemaids were downstairs and, because they were out, the nurse would be with them. Romara went into her bedroom and, taking Alexander from Caryl, laid him on the bed. “Go to the nursery and fetch just a few things you think he will need,” she said. “We can buy the rest.” Caryl looked at her wide-eyed, but she obeyed. Then Romara pulled a small valise from the cupboard and filled it with several gowns that both she and Caryl could wear but which were the quietest and least ostentatious they possessed. It was lucky that it was so hot, Romara thought, and they would not want many thick heavy garments. Two pretty shawls should keep them warm
