Romara was driving with Lord Ravenscar in his phaeton, while Caryl and Alexander in the arms of his wet nurse drove with the Squire.
It was, however, impossible for Romara to talk intimately with Lord Ravenscar, because the groom was sitting up behind them.
Although he might have been unable to overhear what was being said quietly, Romara was very conscious that he was there.
