The vampire hunters were already close. So close that it was too late to run. So they had only one option left. To hide.
With their vampire speed, they hopped on a tree and stayed still as the vampire hunters came to a stop beneath them. They were two. A man and a woman.
“Their attacks have increased recently. And this wood has been their latest target." The man muttered.
“Those motherfu—“ The woman started but trailed off as her eyes caught sight of a dead deer. “Is that a deer?”
“Yes, it is.” He said, confirming her guess.
“I think a vampire was here. We need to look for that thing.” The woman said with urgency as she slipped out her gun.
He shook his head slightly. “It would have been long gone. We’ve already searched everywhere in this wood, and there are no traces of them.”
“I swear to God, I’ll make sure every single one of them is destroyed.” She groaned.
“Hunting shadows—“ The man started reciting their slogan, and the woman joined.
"Wielding stakes, protecting humanity against the immortal's fate, We are vampire hunters. Defenders of Day and Night.”
“Look what I found.” An older man suddenly said as he approached them, and they turned to look at him.
The woman raised a brow. “A phone?”
The man nodded. “But it’s dead, though.”
“Do you think it’s for a vampire?” She asked curiously.
He shook his head. “No vampire would be stupid enough to leave their phone in the woods. It’s probably for a dump teenager.”
The man’s words triggered Angel, and she impulsively tried to jump and attack him, but Damon was swift enough to hold her still. He shot a glare at her, warning her not to give them out.
“Just toss it somewhere and let’s go.” The woman suggested, and the man did just that.
After they left, Damon and Angel finally descended from the tree.
“Luck’s on our side. We didn’t get caught.” Damon grinned as he began to walk towards Angel’s phone.
“We could have been killed, Damon."
“But we weren’t. Let’s just look at the upside to it.” He bent down to pick up the phone before straightening
back up and flashing it at her. “At least they found your phone.”
She sighed. “Let’s just leave.”
He nodded in agreement. “Okay, Angel.”
Damon drove her to her house, and they didn’t say a word to each other until she was about to hop out of the car.
“What’s wrong?” Damon asked, finally breaking the silence.
“Are you seriously asking me that question, Damon?” She retorted, arching her brow. “For God’s sake, we would’ve been killed by those hunters. Why should we have to live this way just because we’re vampires? We didn’t hurt anyone. If they had caught us, they would’ve killed us without thinking twice for doing nothing. I am not okay, Damon. Not at all.”
He sighed, knowing she was telling the absolute truth. But it was the fate they had to live with, and there was nothing they could do about it.
“Why don’t you go and rest?" Was all he had to say.
“I was about to do just that.” Angel groaned as she flung the door open and slipped out of the car.
As she walked towards the front door, the door swung open, and her dad appeared in front of it, worries saturating his features.
“Where have you been, Angel? Do you know how worried I was about you?” He flicked his gaze to the car she just alighted from. “And who’s that?”
“That’s Damon. The guy that saved me from your vampire friends who tried to kill me.” She told him as she walked past him and entered the house. “And I came back late, before I wasn’t conscious of time. I lost my phone in the woods, and I went to look for it.”
“The woods?” Her dad groaned as he trailed behind her. "Where you almost got killed?”
She half turned to look at him. “Oh, Dad, I'm fine. Aren’t I?”
“You were always obedient, Angel. You weren’t a rebellious teenager.” He stated calmly. “What changed?”
“Not until I found out that you are keeping secrets from me. Secrets about my life that I need to know about.” She retorted as she started walking up the stairs.
“Angel!” Jake called after her, and she stopped in her tracks, turning to look at him.
“And by the way, Dad. I almost got killed today by one of your own.” She revealed.
Confusion spread across his face as he took a step forward. “What do you mean?”
“At the woods. I almost got caught by vampire hunters.” She elaborated.
“Angel. Listen to me and listen carefully.” He began, his tone firm.
“Under no circumstances should you go back to those woods. And quit hanging out with that vampire. I don’t trust him.”
“Okay, daddy.” She said sarcastically as she turned back and continued on her way.
“Angel.” He called after her, but she didn’t bother to stop or look back. She was sick and tired of listening to him.
The only thing she wanted to hear from him was the secret he had refused to tell her.
Her mom was standing at the top of the staircase when she got there.
“Angel.” Emily called softly.
“Good evening, mom. And good night.” She muttered as she walked past her.
Slipping into her room, she rushed down to the fridge and tugged out a gallon of blood. She didn’t even bother to get a cup as she chugged the blood down straight from the gallon.
The blood tasted stale. She didn’t know what it felt like to drink blood straight from the source until Damon showed her how to. She wanted fresh blood, not the stale thing her dad kept feeding her.
As she pulled the gallon away from her lips, her eyes caught sight of Taylor.
Oh, no. She forgot to lock the door. He was standing there, looking terrified, still trying to process what he just saw.
After he had registered it in his head, he let out a screeching scream.
