Someone pushes me aside, and I crash to the floor as everyone around me laughs. I'm Anastasia Montez, 17, turning 18 next month. I'm a school nerd, as you've probably noticed. My locker is next to Stephanie Shears, the self-proclaimed queen bee with blonde hair, hazel eyes, and fake boobs. She's the captain of the cheerleading squad and is currently dating the captain of the track team after Justin, one of the bad boys, dumped her over the summer. How do I know this? News spreads like wildfire here, and I caught wind of it last Monday. As I approach my locker, I see Stephanie applying makeup in the mirror of her locker door. She's in a mini skirt, a white crop top, and heels. When I open my locker, a bunch of garbage falls out, and Stephanie smirks as everyone laughs. The bell rings, and everyone rushes to class. The janitor, Joe, comes to clean up. He became my friend in freshman year after I hid in the janitor's closet every day. "Go ahead, I'll clean up. That's my job," he says. I nod and hurry down the hall. Turning a corner, I bump into someone and fall. "I'm sorr—" I look up to see Justin, one of the bad boys, smirking at me. The five guys with him watch me with amused expressions. I get up and head to my chemistry class. "Welcome, Anastasia. It's good to see you join us," the teacher says. I roll my eyes and sit next to my lab partner, Juliet. The morning continues normally, with me getting pushed aside, slammed, or pranked. Finally, it's lunchtime. I join the line in the cafeteria, planning to eat in the janitor's closet as usual. When I reach the door, I hear noise inside. I open it and gasp, "What the hell?!" Stephanie and her boyfriend are having s*x. I slam the door shut, losing my appetite. I give some stolen money to someone and head to the library. ******* Now I'm in P.E., wearing the uniform with my chestnut hair in a ponytail. We're doing running today, and all the cheerleaders are excused for practice, leaving just a few of us, including Justin and Luke. They keep watching and smiling at me. I take off my glasses, wondering why I even wear them since I don’t need them. We all start running laps around the field. I can run long distances because, during my first-year, the jocks used to run me home, which is a fifteen-minute walk away. The whistle blows, and we start our laps. I pass two boys who watch me in surprise. One says, "You aren't an athlete, nerd." I reply, "Well, I am, since I'm in front of both of you." I pick up my pace, passing another guy and smirking at him as I continue running, my breathing becoming heavy. Some guys start to slow down or walk, while only the running team and the two bad boys keep jogging. I'm doing well for a girl. I catch up to a jock who frowns, saying, "I can't lose to a nerd; it would ruin my reputation." I roll my eyes at his ridiculous concern. After the run, I finished ahead of the annoying jock. "Ana, you did well for a girl," the coach says. "All the guys who came in after Ana, give me twenty sit-ups and fifty push-ups." The same guy I passed shoots me a threatening look, and I smirk. Someone whispers in my ear, "You're full of surprises, nerd." I turn to see Luke. I snap, "So what? Gonna do something about it?" He just smiles and walks away with his friend. I enter the locker room, where I hear chatter. "I can't believe Justin and Luke were staring at her and smiling." "Luke actually talked to her; I had to rub my eyes twice to believe it." "She can't be good at running; look at her, she can't even dress properly." "She made my boyfriend late because he had to do extra work." I walk in to see the cheerleaders gasp and fall silent. Acting like I didn't hear anything, I take a shower. I put on baggy sweatpants and a shirt, deciding to walk home instead of taking the bus. I have a red SUV and a motorcycle, but I don't know why I don't use them. As I reach the school parking lot, I am pushed to the ground. A group of guys surrounds me, and one from P.E. lifts me by my collar. With brown eyes, he punches me in the face three times before throwing me down. They all start kicking me, and tears fill my eyes. Just as I'm about to faint, someone comes to fight the jocks. I feel someone pick me up and carry me to a vehicle, and that’s when I faint.
