Thirteen years later…..
Cheyenne’s P.O.V
Dad, Spike, Axel, Mercury and I were in Gatlinburg Tennessee today. We had flown here to collect a p*****t from a guy who had borrowed money so that he could buy a warehouse and start his own business building cars, but it didn’t work out that way, so he hid from Mercury instead of just talking to him. The kids were all grown up and didn’t have to worry about the dangers around them now, so we left Anna and William in charge of the pack while we were away. We were all currently spread out in a warehouse full of boxes containing car parts and other car stuff, but something seemed and felt really off to me. I heard a bang and heard the bullet come flying through the air at us.
“MERCURY!! WATCH OUT!!!!” I screamed and he turned and looked at me, just as a bullet went flying past his head, barely missing him. We had already killed three of his guys and he was now the only one left, so he was getting desperate and needed to do something. Mercury turned around and he fired his gun again, this time shooting him in the back. Mercury fell to the floor, quickly shifting into his wolf to help get the bullet out and to begin the healing process. Mercury and I had been separated while in here, so I was standing on the other side of some metal chicken wire fencing and I was making my way round to him, so I would be able to help him soon enough, but I could still see everything. Mercury looked up at the man and growled at him, snapping his jaws at him, as I ran a bit further, trying to find an opening or a hole I could get through to him. Mercury ran and jumped at the man, latching onto his throat and the guy fell onto the ground with Mercury on top of him, biting into his throat. I knew this guy would be dead soon, but the guy kept trying to reach for something and I couldn’t see what it was from where I was. I knew it wasn’t a gun because that was on the floor and he was reaching in the opposite direction. Mercury pulled back and then dove back in, sinking his teeth in further, but before life could leave the guy's eyes I heard a yelp. I saw an opening in the fence a little way down and quickly ran through it, then came up behind Mercury’s wolf, Asher. I watched as he shifted back and slowly turned around, but there was something wrong. There was a knife stuck deep into Mercury’s chest, going right into his heart.
“Sorry love….” Mercury said and that was the last thing he said before he collapsed on the ground. I ran over to him and applied pressure to the wound, but left the knife in so he wouldn’t bleed out.
“DAD, AXEL, SPIKE!!! I NEED YOU HERE NOW!! MERCURY’S BEEN STABBED!!! HE’S HURT BAD!!” I shouted through the mind-link to them. Within a matter of seconds they were here with me and saw what was happening, but we needed a plan to get him safely back to Doctor Cloud. Dad, Spike and Axel hoisted Mercury up, while I kept the pressure on his wound. We carried him out of there and to the car, going straight to the airport, which in itself was risky with the compression of the cabins, but it was our best chance for him to survive. We flew home and rushed him straight to the pack hospital, where Doctor Cloud was already waiting for us. He examined Mercury and checked the wound as well as his vitals, but the whole time he kept shaking his head.
“Cheyenne, I’m sorry, but if I take the knife out he will die. I’m afraid there is nothing I can do, he needs a transplant and he needs one fast.” Doctor Cloud said, making me gasp.
“But...but where are we going to find a heart?” I asked, hoping in a weird sort of way they just had them lying around.
“He’s half lycan and wolf, it's going to be impossible to find a match for him in time. I’m sorry, Luna.” Doctor Cloud replied, placing his hand on my shoulder and trying to comfort me. No, there had to be a way to save him, there just had to be. Lycan, werewolf, he needed someone to match him, to match him in everything.
“Take mine.” I said, making Doctor Cloud suddenly look up at me in shock.
“You said he needed a new heart, but it had to be one that came from someone who was half wolf and half lycan, well that's me and it will be better as I am his mate. We are the other half to each other, so it will work.” I said, but he looked at me in disbelief.
“But...but Luna, if we did this then what about….” Doctor Cloud started to ask, but I cut him off.
“Mercury needs this now, whereas I’m not in any immediate danger, so if you took my heart and gave it to Mercury, you could hook me up to a load of machines and keep me alive like that, couldn’t you?” I asked and he looked like he was seriously thinking about it and weighing everything up.
“Yes, yes I could, but we wouldn’t have long to find you a heart before everything else in your body started to deteriorate, we would have a year, maybe two depending how your body reacts, but it's not just your body I’m worried about, we have to think of your mind as well. It would be like going into a coma of sorts.” Doctor Cloud explained and I nodded.
“Start to get everything ready, we don’t have a lot of time and I would like to see my family before this happens.” I said and he quickly nodded.
“I need you all here, now.” I said, mind-linking everyone. After a couple of minutes everyone rushed into the waiting room and I then came in and stood in the middle of them as they surrounded me. My dad, Faith and their daughter Angel, William, Anna and their kids, Selena, Axel and their kids, Isaiah, Gabrielle, Goldie and Trevor. Here they were, my parents, my children, my grandchildren and my friends who were also my family. Here they all were and yet this was goodbye for now. I explained what was happening and what I was going to do, then waited to hear any objections or other ideas, but all I got were sighs and sobs.
“Do you think he would have done the same for you? Think Cheyenne.” My dad asked, in a last ditch attempt at trying to stop me, but we both knew the answer to that.
“I have thought about it and you know as well as I do that he would do it. The kids need him, daddy, the pack needs him, he is the stronger one out of the two of us. I love him and he loves me, it's his only chance at surviving this, whereas I will have a much higher chance.” I said and my dad shook his head as Doctor Cloud came back into the waiting room. He handed me the paperwork and I quickly read through it, then signed it and handed it back to him. I stood up and looked at everyone, trying to memorise all their faces so that when I woke up I would be able to see how much they have changed.
“When he wakes up, tell him that this was my decision, tell him that I loved him with all my heart, so I gave it to him completely. Tell him to live for me and tell him that I’ll always be there for him.” I said, trying to hold back the tears as I looked at the faces of my children.
“Mommy, why do you have to go? Why can’t we have you and daddy? It's not fair, please don’t leave us.” Gabrielle said as she started crying. I took her in my arms and held her close to me, hugging her tightly.
“My baby girl, I’ll always be with you, as I will be with the others, I promise.” I said and kissed her forehead.I hugged everyone one last time and then walked away, not looking back. I knew that if I even just glanced back I would have changed my mind and I didn’t want to do that. Our family and pack needed him, he was much stronger than I was.
“Doctor Cloud, I need to write something on the paperwork and I need you to make sure that it is seen to. If they don’t find a heart for me in a year, then I want them to take me off the life support machines.” I said and he went to protest, but once he looked at me he slowly nodded. I went into Mercury’s room and saw that they had already sedated him for the operation, but I also knew that as a werewolf and lycan it wouldn’t last as long.
“My love, if only you knew how much I truly love you. I’m doing this for our family, they need you, so you just remember this. I’ll always be here with you.” I whispered and softly kissed him on the lips.
“I’m ready.” I said, turning to face Doctor Cloud. He nodded and handed me a gown, then left the room for a few minutes. I was just putting the gown on when I felt like someone was watching me, so I turned and found that it was Mercury watching me.
“Cheyenne, what are you doing? Don’t...don’t do this…..” Mercury mumbled, but the medication they had given him was too strong and he was out once again. I had tears in my eyes as I looked at the knife still stuck in his chest, maybe if I hadn’t been there today he wouldn’t be on this table.
“I love you, Mercury Black.” I whispered, kissing him again.
“Are you ready, Luna Cheyenne?” Doctor Cloud asked, walking back into the room.
“Yes, let's get this done.” I replied, not once taking my eyes of my mate, my love, my husband. My Mercury.
