Chapter One
Betty POV Flying high in the sky in my dragon form. Gloria is the only female dragon. The female dragon became extinct many centuries ago, though why was not clear. I had some special gifts, one being I could be invisible when in the sky, the flecks of silver on my scale reflected the light, making me hard to see. I was enjoying the peaceful night, chatting to my dragon about our leaving the only home we had known. I was found wandering the village streets when the people who were my parents found me. I am eighteen now and felt it was time to find out who I am. I shifted the first time, when I was six, to the shock of my mum, and from then on I had to keep my ability a secret. Mum shared it with Dad, he asked me to shift and show him. He loved my golden color. From that day on, I only shifted at night when everyone was asleep, to keep my secret hidden. Suddenly, the night’s peace was shattered by the screams of pain in the wind. And the growls of the wild dragons that roam at night. They are like rogue shifters, dragons that can no longer shift and terrorize the land, taking humans to who knows where, and what they do with them is unknown, hopefully not to be food for the ones back at their den. Alert to the way of these wild dragons, I flew without thought of my danger and straight to the screams of the people in need. I have killed a few of these rogue dragons over the years. They are not that well organized, each fighting independently. Not once have they worked as a team. If they did, they would have better results, but I can use that to my advantage. Seeing through my dragon's eyes, I saw the first dragon in the sky and came at him at speed. At the last moment, I rolled and clawed the underside of the dragon, sending his guts bursting out and over me, shaking his mess off of me as I continued with my momentum towards the next rogue. I rolled in one graceful move and found my next target dragon, but he was ready for me, having seen my killing of the other dragon, and I could not risk attempting the same move with him. He sent a spray of fire out of his mouth, but I am a dragon with special powers that only female dragons have and his fire was like a warm breath warming me softly as it cascaded over my golden scales. I returned the favor and showered him with my fiery breath, on his now-exposed belly, burning his most sensitive part. Yeah, he should not have reared up and exposed himself like that, as if being a huge dragon would impress me, but thanks to the opportunity for an easy hit, he screamed in pain and fled, his fighting days were over for a while. The screams from below had not stopped. I looked down to see a ground of shifters, who had not shifted, trying to protect some wagons, and though they were fighting well and over time most likely would win, at what cost, those humans in the wagons did not stand a chance, they had no defense from a dragon. Swooping down, I grabbed the nearest dragon by the neck while he was distracted by attacking the good-looking man below, broke the wild dragon’s neck with one flick of my head, and spat out the corpse on the ground. Yuck, it tasted bad. Then I looked for my next victim. There are not that many now. Some had fled when I broke that one’s neck. I headed to the nearest wild dragon. Somehow, my timing was just right and it was not by my planning, it was just some kind of luck that I managed to drag my claw through the join of his wing, making the arm useless. The dragon fell to the ground where the men finished him off with quick movements, not letting the injured dragon cause any more damage. The last few wild dragons flew away with angry growls at me. I hovered in the sky, until the wild dragons were out of sight, and then looked down at the mess below. There was little I could do for these people. The men were gathering the young lads out of the wagons and assessing the damage. They would be here a few days, fixing the wagons and regrouping. I landed nearby and contemplated if I should shift and talk to these people. I had kept them hidden for so long, that staying hidden was my first instinct. My dragon, Gloria, said to not shift, the timing was not right. When a few men came forward and bowed to me, huh? I was not expecting that, and I was not sure about being bowed to. Mind you, I have never shown myself to anyone before. I have kept my dragon hidden from everyone. I am the only female dragon to exist and if the males found me, I would be forcefully taken and I was not about to let that happen. ‘Thank you, would you mind shifting?’ the handsome man asked, and Gloria shouted in my head “Mate”, Not now Gloria. I growled back. Using the mind link, I replied. ‘Hi, is there anything I can get you to aid in your travels?’ I spoke softly, trying not to hurt the man's ears, having not used a mind link like this before. His eyes widened at my voice and his mouth changed to one of a smile. ‘You are a female dragon.’ He mind-linked back to me, well dah. ‘Really that is what you want to talk about? Please tell me. Do you need me to bring back help?’ I asked again a little annoyed he would speak the obvious. I guess if the kingdom had not seen a female dragon in centuries, I would be a shock to them. ‘No, we have all we need.’ He replied, his men looking at him, unsure what to do. They were not part of the mind-link and their confused looks told us that. ‘Be well, I am sure we shall meet again one day.’ I nodded my head at them and took off to the skies, my night of peace shattered, time to return to my bed and catch some sleep. It was my brother's sixteenth birthday and I needed to get a little party ready for him. He was bringing a few friends home after school to celebrate.
