Chapter 13 - Fierce

............. Harlow ............. “Wha-what?” I stutter, shocked. There’s no way he could have said what I think he just said. I couldn't have heard him correctly. “You are going to be a mother, Harlow. You are expecting.” “Ho-how? No! I can’t be pregnant. I can’t!” I cry out, my heart rate accelerating as I start to struggle against the restraints. I can’t be pregnant. He has to be mistaken. “Calm down, it’s going to be okay,” he says, placing his hands on my shoulders, trying to get me to stop, but I scream, asking him to get me out of the straps. Nothing is going to be okay. I don't want to have a baby. I don't want to be a mother. “Harlow! Stop! You’re going to hurt yourself!” he says, pushing me back down and I break down and cry. Why is this happening to me? He forced himself on me. It wasn’t my fault. Why am I carrying his child? A monster’s child. “Please, get it out of me. I don’t want it. Take it out, please,” I beg him, but he just gives me a sad look before letting me go. He picks up a syringe and fills it with something while I continue begging him. When he's done, he places the small bottle down and walks over to me. I scream as he holds my arm still before injecting me with something that instantly makes me drowsy. “Please, get it out,” my voice slurs as my eyes flutter close. . . . ....... Isla ...... “Have any of you seen Deegan?” I ask a group of guards and one of them points me at a structure on the far side of the yard. I make my way to it. Today is Monday and I'm starting with my on-the-floor training. I arrived more than an hour ago, but I haven’t seen my uncle yet. I heard he arrived this morning already and have been waiting in his office but he hasn’t shown up. I was told by one of the guards that he was busy with a work matter but that was a while ago, and I got bored of waiting. So, I decided to go find him. I was given directions but I got confused again; this place has gotten bigger and I haven’t been here in a long time. A lot has changed. I've only been here for more than an hour but I can already tell I’m going to make a lot of changes. “Are you on lunch?” I ask one of the guards and he says no. “Then why are you on your ass and not your feet?” I ask and he impertinently gets up. I’m going to deal with him later. There’s going to be no slacking on my watch. All this bloody lazing around that I’ve noticed since getting here is going to stop. I enter the small building without knocking since the door is open and I can already hear voices, including Deegan’s, on the other side of the second ajar door. “Are you sure the baby is human? I hear him say, just as I raise my fist to knock and I stop, and listen, also making sure to calm my heartbeat so they don't hear it. “By the slow development, yes,” the other man answers. “A paternity test can be done,” he adds, and I hear Deegan sigh. “How long would I have to wait to find out?” he asks and I clamp my hand over my mouth, shocked. Did he impregnate a slave? What the f**k? “A week, two at most,” the man replies and there’s silence for a moment before I hear him say, do it. “Okay, I'll get right on it. I’ll need a sample from you to compare with,” he says, and I don’t hear Deegan’s reply. After a moment, I hear footsteps and I decide to make myself known before someone busts me eavesdropping. “s**t!” I cuss out at particularly nothing, just so they know I’m coming before knocking and pushing the door open. I peek inside since the door was partially open already and Deegan’s face lights up into a smile that doesn’t reach his eyes as he walks up to me to give me a hug. “My favorite niece. Welcome,” he says as we embrace. “Hey uncle D,” I reply into the hug, looking at the girl lying on the bed. “I’m sorry, I kept you waiting. I just had to sort out some things first,” he explains, pulling back from the hug and I tell him it’s alright. He asks me if I’m ready to begin the training and I say I am. “Ah! Where are my manners? Dr. Brooks,” he says, turning to the incredibly attractive doctor who has a polite smile plastered on his face. This is my niece, who’s also to be your new boss soon, Isla. Isla this is Dr. Rey Brooks.” “It’s a pleasure to me you Ma’am,” the hot doctor extends his hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you too. Call me Isla,” I smile, shaking his hand, expecting him to permit me to call him Rey, but he doesn’t. How disappointing. “What’s wrong with her?” I ask, now looking over at the pale-skinned girl passed out on the bed, acting clueless even though I’ve already heard everything. “It’s the worker whose matter I was busy sorting. Are you ready to go?” Deegan quickly answers before motioning towards the door. “Yes! See you later Mr…” I trail off with a smile, looking at the doctor, granting him another opportunity for first-name bases, and he returns my smile. “Dr. Brooks,” he corrects and I can’t help but be disappointed as I let out a yes before turning around and heading out, Deegan following closely behind me. He asks me about my mother, who had a problem with some guy in her complex and I tell him it’s been sorted. “Are you okay?” I ask him as we enter his office, giving him the opportunity to tell me about what I just overheard between him and the doctor if he wants to but he tells me he’s fine. “Okay,” I reply, pulling the other chair to sit on, knowing it doesn’t matter. He speaks to my mother about everything, and she tells me everything. So, in the end, I’m going to know exactly what went down. His behavior was bound to catch up with him at some point. He's been having too much fun in these mines. I wonder what Hades would have to say about it, cause I know they are not allowed to have kids. If my mother started working for Hades before I was born, I probably would never have been born. “Can I ask you for a favor before you start with your training?” he suddenly asks, snapping me out of my thoughts, and I tell him sure. “Can you go over the surveillance footage, starting from three months ago? I’ll tell you which cell,” he adds, and again I tell him sure but I ask him why this time. “Because something happened and I need to get to the bottom of it and I need to do it quickly,” he replies and I nod before asking where the footage is. He asks me to follow him to the other room and I do. We enter the room and a monitor sits in the corner of the room. We head to it and he punches in the password before pulling out a chair for me, instructing me to sit. I do and he starts going through the cameras and after a moment he stops. “This is the cell I want you to look at, and this,” he says, pointing at a girl who's sitting on the floor, crying. She still has a full head of hair, so I assume she had just been brought into the cell. “This is who I want you to look at. I want you to tell me if she…. she... if she comes into physical contact with anyone who isn’t female,” he stutters, and I look at his face to find him looking everywhere in the room except me. I also don’t fail to notice that this is the same girl in that doctor’s room, right now. So, he suspects she might have been screwed by someone else? Interesting. “Sure thing,” I chirp with a smile and he places a kiss on my forehead, muttering a thank you. This is going to be fun. . . . ......... Elora ........ “What do I feel like?” I mutter to myself, stopping in front of the counter. I’m currently at Maggie’s; it’s a coffee shop down the street from our campus. My bike is being serviced, so Hudson is picking me up this week but after work. He has a job he’s doing during the day this month and finishes thirty minutes after my last class, so I wait for him here. “Hey, Dina,” I greet the cashier as she stops in front of me before asking for a coffee and a chocolate muffin. After placing my order, I head down to the tables and take a seat. I always sit at the table with the river view and watch the kayakers race up and down the river while my stomach churns. I have a serious case of aquaphobia. Yet, I can't keep my eyes away from them. I’m still watching them when I hear a familiar voice speak next to me and I turn my head to find the one face I could do without ever seeing again in my life. “Hi, are-are you sitting with someone?” the ass-face stutters. “Yes,” I reply and look away again, wishing he’d just go away quickly, but I hear the sound of the chair next to me and I look on my right to find him sitting down. I immediately feel something stir in the pit of my stomach, the moment our eyes meet. He gives me a soft smile but I get up and grab my bag before moving to a seat in the far corner. “Oh, here you are,” Dina says, walking towards me with my order. “Girl, are you blind? Why on earth would you walk away from him?” she asks, looking over at Zane and the look on her face makes me gag. If only she knew what an asshole he is. “My eyesight is perfectly fine, thank you. I'm just trash-blind,” I reply, looking over at the bastard, and I see him take his face in his hands like he heard what I just said. Not that I care if he did. I hate the evil bastard. “O...kay,” Dina says, with a raised brow before looking at him, then back at me like I'm some alien. “Enjoy your coffee, and let me know if you need anything else,” she adds, and I thank her as she walks away. I grab my bag and take out my headphones. I put on shivers by Ed Sheeran before picking up my coffee mug and sipping my coffee. . . A message comes through on my phone after a long moment and it’s Hudson, telling me he’s running late but leaving his workplace now. He says he'll be here in twenty. I get up and grab my bag, unable to unsee the jerk on my right, no matter how much I try to block him out of my view. I will wait for Hudson outside. I walk past the chauvinist pig but realize I need to pee first; it’s quite a distance to my house. I’ll pee myself. So, I head back to the ladies. I decide to use the time that I’m sitting in the stall to put my phone and headphones in my bag. I exit the stall when I’m done relieving myself. I wash my hands, also noticing I have some chocolate from the muffin on my right cheek and I clean it. I fix my hair and head out of the bathroom when I'm done, but I scream, startled, running into Zane when I open the door. “I can explain," he quickly says but I reach inside my pocket and take out my pepper spray. “Laura,” the bastard says, grabbing the hand with the spray but I headbutt him in the face, causing him to let go before kneeing him in the crotch. He leans over, groaning and I use the opportunity to knee him in the face, sending him tumbling to his knees. “Touch me again and I will kill you, you sick f**k!” I warn him, just as Dina and other customers come into our view. “Elora, what the hell?” Dina exclaims as gasps erupt from the onlookers but I don’t reply and run out of the place. He will never make me his toy thing again. . . . ......... Zane ......... “Oh, my God! What happened?” my mother says, catching me on her way from the kitchen as I try to sneak past the living area. “Is that Zane?” I hear my father ask before he comes into my sight as well. “Holly, crap! What the hell happened to you?” he asks as my mother cups my face. “It’s just dry blood you guys. It's no big deal.” “Dry blood that came from you. Why were you bleeding, Zane? Come... sit,” she orders, taking my hand and walking me over to the couch before telling my father to get some wet wipes. “Zane, what happened?” my mother asks again and I sigh, realizing I might as well tell them and get them off my back. “It’s Laura,” I start to say, and my dad bursts out laughing, causing my mother, who still has my face in her hands to let go as we glare at him, and he raises his hands, muttering a sorry while stifling a laugh. “Laura, as in your mate... Laura?” my mother asks and I nod, and she asks me why. “I wanted to talk to her, so I followed her to the ladies, and-” I start to say, but they cut me off. “-You what?!” they both shriek at the same time, giving me the same look I got from those people at the restaurant. “It’s not what it sounds like. I didn’t go inside the ladies' bathrooms, I just entered the first door. Not the one that goes into the stalls.” “Still, it wasn’t ideal, Zane,” my mother says, while my dad snickers, causing me to remove my mother’s hands from my face, getting angry. “And you guys think I don’t know that?” I growl, trying to get up. They are annoying the hell out of me right now, but my mother pushes me back down by my shoulders. Before glaring at my dad again. “This is not funny, Jack!” she says and he apologizes before turning to me again. “I know. You're right. I’m sorry, son, but surely you should have known that wasn't going to end well.” “I was desperate and I didn't want to cause a scene. You guys don’t know what it’s like for me. It’s been over two months since I found out she’s my mate, and yet I can’t tell her because she hates me. My wolf, on the one hand, is driving me crazy, wanting to be with his counterpart. Half the time I feel like I’m losing my mind!” “My poor, baby. I’m so sorry,” my mother says, pulling me into a hug, and my dad joins in too. “I didn't mean to act like a creep. I just wanted to talk to her. I wanted her to give me a chance to apologize for what I did to her, and now I've made everything worse.” “We know, baby,” my mother says, now pulling back from the hug. “Maybe I can go speak to her for you,” she adds, but I shake my head. “Thanks, mom. I really appreciate the offer but I have to fix this myself,” I tell her and my dad nods before telling me my nose is crooked. “Yeah, he’s right, and it’s better if you let him fix it,” my mother says, and my dad walks up to me and squats in front of me before reaching for my face. “Are you ready?” he asks and I nod. My nose has healed now, which means he’s going to have to break again. I tell him to do it but groan in pain before I’m finished as he snaps it. “Love f*****g hurts!” I cry out, a lone tear running down my face and my mother shouts “Language!” while my father, says “Tell me about it" before telling me to wear a helmet next time, causing my mother to finally lose her composure and laugh. At least they are having fun at my expense. “You guys are terrible,” I mutter, getting up, leaving them still laughing as I head back to my room. But I hear my dad’s cell phone just as I walk past their bedroom. I enter and see the phone on the bed. I take it and it’s an international call. I answer it, telling the person on the other side to hold on while I take it to my dad. “Dad!” I call him, breaking their little comedy show, and he gets up seeing the phone in my hand. I give it to him and walk back upstairs when I’m done. I take off my bloody shirt and plop on the bed before lying on my back; Laura’s face, as she warned me, flashing in front of my eyes; her words ringing in my ears, and I smile. She looked so fierce. My mate is badass. I’m still drooling over her while trying to come up with another plan, a better one this time when a knock on the door snaps me out of my thoughts. I raise my head to find my father coming inside the room with a somber expression, causing me to abruptly sit up as he makes his way to the bed. “What’s wrong dad?” I ask as he settles next to me, rubbing his hands over his face before looking at me. “The call was from someone who spoke to Arlo, and he told him how his family was discovered,” he says, shocking me. I wasn't even sure he was in contact with the people who know where Arlo is since he didn’t want to tell me anything. “What did he say? How were they discovered?” I ask, my heartbeat accelerating for some reason. “It was his mate.” “What?” “It was his mate, son. She and her family are hunters.”
