2 - Brat

Jake "I've been summoned by the Alpha, I'll see you later." I flick the cigarette bud away as I leave my friends behind and walk towards the pack house where my father's office is. The mind link had been short, the concealed anger in my father's voice hadn't escaped me, but I didn't say anything. I only told him I'll be there in 10 minutes. It's not like I wasn't expecting the meeting to happen, after the whole show at school today. I was a little surprised that my mother didn't come to school herself to see what I had done, but I'm sure the headmistress filled her in, and then some. What can I say? The little b***h deserved it for not showing respect to her future Alpha. She ruined my favourite shoes, so she had to clean them. Everyone in my group of friends demanded a show once that girl dropped her tray of food on me, so I gave them a show. A good Alpha always take his people's wishes into account, right? I have to stop a few times to rub the lemon tree leaves, that I always carry with me, on my hands and face. It's a clever little trick I've learned to help me mask the smell of cigarettes and smoke before my parents see me. I'm not going to bore you with what happened after the first time they discovered me smoking, but I will say this: The Persian rug in my dad's office was set on fire and I discovered the magic that lemon tree leaves can do about masking the smell of cigarettes. I'm actually a little proud of myself for keeping this up so long.  The poor lemon tree that sat in a pot at the entrance of the pack house has been replaced countless times because the leaves would fall off mysteriously. I'm just glad the Omegas working in the pack house never thought about buying a different plant altogether. I guess it only speaks to their intelligence, doesn't it? It would have been hard to explain to my mother why I would suddenly want to have a lemon tree decorating my room if they did that. I mumble a few hellos as I walk inside the pack house, and frown a little when everyone I meet is going out instead of in. A stray thought peaks in my head. Are they all running away from the pack house? Oh come on, it's not like I haven't been suspended from school before. I enter my father's office with a chuckle, but it disappears as soon as I see him and my mom with solemn faces like they're attending the King's funeral. They tell me to take a seat, and I do so casually, trying to look composed despite my wolf being restless inside me.  We don't have such a great relationship, my wolf and I. I only talked to him a few times when he first surfaced and I shifted, but nothing since. I don't think he likes me very much, and the feeling has been mutual so far. I only like the massive black beast he turns into when I shift. I'm almost as big as my father, and for a teenager, that's the biggest ego boost you could get. I am indeed a pure Alpha, both from my mother's side, and my dad's, therefore I'm sure Fang will come around once it's our turn to be the Alpha of this pack. Or when we meet our mate, apparently that's what he is waiting for, from what I could gather when I talked to him. "Jacob, in light of what happened today at school, Miss Jetson has decided to expel you. You will not be allowed to go back to school." I have to do a double take upon hearing my mother's words. I feel anger bubbling up inside. That b***h! That unmated, unloved and unfucked b***h thinks she can expel me? Her future Alpha? Seeing the anger rise in me, they deliver the second bomb of the day. Overkill much? "Son, we've decided that it would be good for you to go live with Bolder and Carla for a while." Like I said, overkill. I look at my dad like he just told me he wants to become a woman. In response, he pinches the bridge of his nose, and I can swear I just saw a strand of his hair turn grey. "And what if I don't want to go? I'm not a child that you can just ship away because you are failing as parents!" The second those words leave my mouth I regret them, but I'm too enraged to stop myself now. I don't miss the tears rolling out of my mother's eyes, and it breaks my heart into little pieces knowing I am the cause of that, yet I don't apologise, I'm too damn proud to do that. A powerful growl makes my eyes dart back to my father, who looks like he's seconds away from shifting and mauling me, completely forgetting I'm his son. "Then you can kiss the Alpha title goodbye." He roars at me, a vein pulsating in his temple. He looks like he's aged 10 years in the past ten minutes, but I don't give a s**t about that. The old man can't take my birth right from me. "You can't do that. I'm the heir to the Alpha title. This will be my pack to lead!" I roar out loud, matching the intensity of my father's roar, for the first time in ages, Fang being right there with me. "Need I remind you of how your uncle Bolder's pack is choosing their Alphas? If trials can be held in America to choose the strongest and most worthy Alpha, then what stops us from doing the same here?" I stare into his eyes and don't see any traces of lies. He's serious. He is actually serious about this. From a stupid, harmless prank to this, I can't believe it. "Dad, you can't!" I'm not at all ashamed that the confidence I had earlier slowly begins to falter as it dawns upon me that this time my parents are actually going to make good on their threats. "It's Alpha! You have lost the right to call me 'dad' when you accused us of failing as parents." My dad shouts and as his fist connects to the dark mahogany desk, the top splinters before it finally breaks in two. A smirk graces my lips, but it only makes my dad angrier as he mutters profanities to himself. I did notice when I walked into the Alpha office that there were only 3 chairs, 2 metal ones and my father's desk with his own chair. Yeah, I might have taken my anger onto his furniture in the past when he and my mom delivered their speeches and punishments after I had gotten into trouble, but it's funny as hell seeing the old man break the desk himself.  "And I can!" He roars again, catching my attention. I roll my eyes. It looks like we're back to this again. Can't he just give me a break? It's like he is forgetting that he used to be a teenager himself.  "Jake, either you go with Bolder or stay here, and when the time comes you can enter the competition for the next Alpha of the Crescent Moon pack. These are the options you get. Choose wisely." My head snapped to look at my mother who had been sitting in a corner far away from us. Her voice is more final than I have ever heard her to be, and I can't help myself. I quickly agree with their initial offer. "Fine. When do I leave?"
