Dominic's POV
I woke up Saturday morning and had one mission in mind. I needed to meet Amaya's brother. I had to know what was wrong with him. I was hoping this would give me some answers.
Once I was ready, I drove to the home that she had him at. When I pulled into the parking lot, I looked around and saw how nice this place was. I knew right here that this is where her money was going. She had to be paying a hefty amount out of pocket for it. It made me understand more about her, but it still didn't explain why she did what she did. The only guess I could come up with was she did it for the money.
I got out of my car and headed inside. The first thing I noticed was the front was completely secured. No one was getting in or out without someone's permission. There was a young redhead sitting at the front desk, who smiled happily at me when I walked in.
"Hello, how can I help you?" she asked sweetly.
"I'm here to visit with Clay Holloway."
"Are you on the list?"
"I should be." I told her and she started typing on the computer and then looked back up to me, "Can I get your ID please?"
I reached into my back pocket and pulled out my wallet and handed it to her and she scanned it and then handed it back to me. "I'm sorry sir but I don't show you on the list."
"Oh, there must be some mistake with that."
"I'm sorry, I can't let you back."
I grabbed a couple of hundred dollar bills out of my wallet and dropped them on the desk, "how about you hit the button and let me back and we'll just pretend you never saw me."
"I really can't do that sir."
"Look, I just want to visit with him. His sister sent me, since she can't be here." I told her and smiled as nicely as I could.
She looked around to see if anyone was watching, "please don't make me regret this," she said as she pocketed the money and hit the buzzer. "He's in room twenty-three."
I nodded to her and went through the door. This place was set up like a little town. When you walked through it had different little restaurants were set up and there was a little grocery store and then a common area where there were people of all ages and disabilities from what I could tell. I tried not to stare but I had never been in a place like this.
"You look lost, who are you looking for?" a nurse asked.
"Clay Holloway."
"Follow me," she said, waving her hand and started walking.
"Can you tell me anything about him?" I asked and she stopped and turned towards me.
"If you are on the visitor log to visit him, shouldn't you know about his condition."
"You would think so but actually it's a favor to his sister and she didn't tell me much."
"Oh. He was deprived of oxygen when he was born and has brain damage. He is fully dependent on someone for care. He also doesn't talk. He makes noise and is happy as can be but no actual words." she said as we stepped into a room. He was in an electric wheelchair and as soon as he saw the nurse his face lit up and he squealed.
"Hello, Clay, this is," she turned to me not realizing I hadn't given her my name. "Dominic." I said and he squealed at me.
I sat down in the chair and the nurse left. Clay just stared at me, and I didn't know what to say. I was hoping that he would be able to give me some information, but it was clear that he wouldn't or rather couldn't.
"What are you watching?" I asked, pointing at the television. It was some car race, but he got excited when I asked him.
He and I watched the race together until someone came in and said it was time for lunch. I told him goodbye and shook his hand as best as he could. I have to say his happiness was contagious and I left in a much better mood. When I got to the front desk again the lady was still as happy as she was before.
"Thank you. Who would I talk to about his medical bills?"
"That would be Barb, let me see if she is available." she said all too sweetly and typed away on her computer as I stood there.
"She will be right out," she said.
She wasn't kidding that she would be right out. Another extremely happy gal came out and motioned for me to follow her back. She took me to a small office that had stacks of paperwork sitting on it and everywhere else. It was a mess, and it was driving me crazy.
"How can I help you?" she asked as soon as we sat down.
"I want to know how much the medical costs are each month for Clay Holloway."
She dug through some of the stacks of paperwork and finally pulled a file out and then looked at me.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't be discussing this with you." she said, holding the file to her chest.
"Look I want to help him and his sister, as an anonymous donor but I need to know what it is they are paying."
She opened the file and read over it and then back at me, "out of pockets cost that he pays is five thousand a month."
"I will take care of three thousand a month, put it on this card," I told her as I flipped a credit card on the table for her, "and if he needs anything or something happens, and he has an extra cost you put it on that card. Send me an invoice every month with a breakdown please," I told her as her eyes bugged out of her head.
"Oh, and this is completely anonymous. At this time don't tell his sister that he has someone helping, keep her money set aside for him."
"Of course, sir, this is very generous," she said, and I had to fill out some paperwork and then was on my way.
When I pulled into my driveway, I sat in my car and pulled up the app on my phone and watched Amaya for a few minutes. I knew that once I took her, I would be paying for his medical care, and I didn't mind doing that. It wasn't his fault that she did this. I wouldn't make him suffer because of her.
Someone banged on my window scaring the s**t out of me and I closed the app really fast to see my sister standing there. She wore a stupid big grin on her face. We weren't super close growing up, but she was the only blood family I had left, and I did love her.
I opened my door, and she hugged me even though we had dinner together last night.
"I know you're leaving again, but would it make a difference if I told you that I didn't want you to."
"I have things to take care of. I'll only be gone for a few more weeks."
"Fine, let's go," she said, pulling me out of the car and looping her arm through mine and we headed to Ace and Berkley's house.
It felt strange walking in here. I hadn't been around them all in over a year and so much has changed since then. We had all changed, but Ace was the biggest change of them all. He was a totally different man but standing in his kitchen watching him holding a baby on his hip and the look of pure love on his face for Berkley was amazing. I never thought he would get to this point, but he deserved to be happy. He put in so much work to get to this point.
"Dominic, it's so good to finally see you." Berkley said with a huge smile that matched her huge belly.
I heard the door open and in walked Tate and Ellie with their two kids and their son was so big. I hadn't seen him since he was little and now, he was huge. Everyone was standing around talking and I had no clue what was wrong. I felt like I didn't belong. I felt like the long-lost friend that they invited out of pity. I was going to leave when Ace walked over.
"Hey this is my daughter Daisy," he said, holding her out to me, but I threw my hands up. I knew nothing about babies. I would probably drop her or something.
"Oh, come on man. You aren't going to hurt her. Just hold her," he said and literally put her in my arms. She laughed at the face her father was making at her and I had to admit it was adorable.
"How are you doing?" he asked quietly.
"Confused. Mad. Ready to be home for good."
"So, what are you waiting for? Let her be and just come home. You have family waiting for you here."
"It doesn't feel like it. Honestly I feel like the long-lost friend who got invited out of pity."
"Seriously. Not even close. We've missed you and you have work piling up."
"Shut up, like you're one to talk."
"Hey, I was getting sober, not stalking some girl."
"Not just any girl. She is the reason that I was in prison, and we don't know if she could have had something to do with what happened to the rest of you. She had to know. Don't you want some sort of revenge on that?"
"We don't know what she did, but you can't spend your life hung up on getting revenge on her. Trust me man, it almost killed me and Berkley. I wanted to know why Savannah did what she did, and it straight up almost killed both of us."
"I can't. I'm not ready to let go. I need answers and I'm not going to stop until I get them, and she gives me a year of her life."
"You are sounding like a crazy man. Seriously you need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. You are going to do nothing but hurt her and yourself when it's all over. I know you love her still. Stop with the anger and just love her. Forgive her."
"It's not that f*****g easy. I just need to know why first and then I will decide what to do with her from there."
"It's your funeral." he said as he took Daisy from me and walked off.
"OK, I'm dying to know what this baby is, can we go outside and do this?" Berkley asked loudly to know one in particular.
We all walked outside, and man had things changed out here. There was a pool and new patio and baby toys all over the place. Everyone gathered around them as they held these tube things. They gave each other a kiss and then twisted them as pink confetti flew everywhere, and they hugged, and we all cheered.
"How long are you here?" Reign asked me.
"Leaving in the morning."
"Take as much time as you need, but when you do get her, I need you to ask some questions."
"OK," I told him, waiting to see what he wanted to know.
"Savannah said that Mason was dead and that she had him taken care of but something about it doesn't sit right about it. It's just a gut feeling."
"How about when I get her here you can ask her yourself."
"Perfect, I can't wait."
