TO THE RESCUE

1138 Words
JUNE was in her fourth bottle of beer and having a great time with Harry. It was the weekend and often, Harry and her, have a few drinks and talk about the events of the previous week. They were in the middle of the conversation when she heard the familiar ringtone of her mobile phone. Diana assigned the song ‘Who lets the dog out’ of Baha Men. She lost in one of the bets they made. In turn, the other will chose the ringtone of their cell phone. Her mate has a great sense of humor. Only if Diane knew that the song is a bit disconcerting on her part. “Yes, little girl.” She answered. “Are you busy?” “No.” She stood up and pick up the key to her bike. She senses distress in Diana’s voice. She motioned Harry that she is going. Her drinking buddy just nodded at her. Earlier today, her mate told her that she and her colleagues will be having a girls’ night out. No worrying, she opted to just ask the place where they are going. “Can you pick me up?” “I’ll be there in 20.” It was a few minutes after 10 PM. It was a little early for them to go home. Though June already planned to ask Diana if she wanted a ride home by 11 PM. With three minutes to spare, June was already outside the bistro where Diana is. From the number of people inside, the place is in full swing. There was an acoustic song playing when she enters. She looked around and her eyes zoomed at the pretty face of her mate. Diana was with a group of six, she included. Three males and three women. They were sitting at a table with three couches facing each other. On each couch was a pair of one male and female. She almost growls when she saw the guy beside her mate putting his arm at Diana’s shoulder. She felt a little better when her mate removed his filthy arm. Not bothering for apologies at the people she bumped into, she made her way to Diana’s. As if her mate felt her presence, their eyes met. Diana’s eyes lit up. Her eyes glowed like Christmas came early. June stood up in front of the group’s table. Six pairs of eyes turned to her. The males gazed at her with admiration while the females see her as a competition. She noticed that all of them were older than Diana. “Can I help you?” Asked the girl in her right. “No, but I’m here for someone.” Her eyes zeroed on her left where her mate is. The guy beside Diane smiles widely. “This must be my lucky night.” He said as he stood up. June grinned at him and patted his shoulder. “Excuse me.” She turned to Diana and reached her hand to help her petite mate to stand.  The young woman beamed at her and put her palm above hers. “Goodnight, everyone.” She put her arm around her mate as they marched toward the exit. “I thought that all girls?” She muttered as they walked towards the bike. “That’s what I’ve told. Those guys came in a little later.” “You knew those guys?” Diana shook her head. “They were friends of Anne.” “I don’t like your date.” “The feeling is mutual.” They made their way to the apartment complex. It did not take long though. June stopped at the space where she usually parked. She was helping Diana when a rotten smell reached her nose. She looked around as her mate removed the helmet. “Everything alright, June?” “Of course.” She said and smiled at her. “Go ahead. I’ll be there in a while.” “Are you sure?” “Yes.” Her eyes followed Diana until she entered the apartment building. She did not bother to look around when she felt the two rogues emerged from the dark. It was a male and a female in their 40’s. Rogues were werewolves that were not part of the pack. Usually, rogues were kicked out of the pack due to misconduct. However, some other werewolves that stayed very long in the human population and no long report to their previous pack were also considered rogues. It was easy to recognize rogues. They have this rotten smell that until now, even from the old archives, no one knows that reason why emit that putrid scent. “This is a peaceful neighborhood.” She started before looking at them. The rogues looked at each other before stepping closer. “You’re from Fortis Lupus pack?” The woman asked. June became alert upon hearing the name of her pack.  “What do you want?” “We need help.” It was the man who answered. With a frown, June stared at them intently. The mark they have on their necks stated that they are mated. They probably are mates.  “Please help us.” The woman begged. Tears glazed her eyes. June observed that the couple, though they were dressed in clean clothes, have bags in their eyes. The distress is clear in the way they moved. The man put his arm at the woman. He pulled her closer and kissed her head. That confirmed that they are mates. “Our daughter has been missing for five days. This never happened before.” “How old is your daughter?” “She’s only 15.” A newly shifted werewolf, June thought. The woman sobbed and hold on to her mates. “Teenagers in the human population behaved differently. Does she have a boyfriend?” The man shook his head. “She already knew about mates. My daughter moved in routine. She goes to school then home. We’re also careful. Even if we live in the human population, we’re still rogues.” “Did you file for the missing person?” “Yes but I think my daughter has been kidnapped.” “Why would you think that?” She asked the worried mother. Again, the mated couple exchanged knowing glances. By the look on their faces, they were talking through the mind link. “This was not the first time that young werewolves went missing.” “What?” June straightened. This conversation is getting more complicated. This plea for help is more than just a simple missing person issue.
