Prologue
Sarah's Point of View
“You’re doing great, Luna, really well.” It was like having a one-woman cheering squad at the 'business end' of my body!
“I want Steven" I screamed the words through my gritted teeth. "I can't do this without him!"
“He’s on his way, Sarah, there was an attack on the borders, but he’s dealing with it. He’ll be here soon, I promise.” She stripped off her thin blue gloves and returned to eye level.
I might only be human, but I knew when I was being lied to. Steven would surely have let the Beta deal with something so trivial, he wouldn’t miss the birth of our little boy.
“I will not do this without him!” I glared at the birthing specialist as best I could whilst puffing and panting like a marathon runner.
She looked angrily at me. “Now listen, Luna, this baby is coming, whether you like it or not.”
Here’s the thing about being a Luna to a werewolf pack when you’re human. They underestimate you.
“No you listen! I'm NOT doing this without Steven. So you either get him here or the heir to the Citrine pack dies! Do you really want that on your conscience?”
She had her mouth open ready to argue… but then her eyes glazed over and she stopped still at my side.
“You need to battle through this, Sarah", a melodic but unfamiliar voice told me. "And after that you and Steven will be together.”
I looked over towards the spare bed in the room. The bed that was available to my mate so he could sleep and take care of me and our son. There was a little girl sitting there. She had her hair in pigtails, she was so cute I almost forgot about my labour pains. She couldn’t have been any more than 5… perhaps this was my son’s future wife.
“Those are wise words for a little girl.” I replied with a small smile.
“Who are you talking to, Luna?” My midwife looked at me like I was on drugs. Clearly, I was hallucinating!
“I’m a grown up actually.” She huffed as she put down her colouring book. Hallucination or not, I had somehow offended her. My pain levels started to ratchet up and I decided I couldn’t care less if her feelings were hurt.
“Sure you are” I muttered to myself just before another massive contraction took over my body.
“Arggggghhhh” I screamed, making noises that I never thought I could make. Jesus did I wish I was a wolf right then. Another part of me would be taking the wheel whilst I floated in the background, able to see everything around me but with no pain!
“He’s nearly here.” The little girl sang excitedly. Her eyes rolled back into her skull. She looked bloody terrifying then, and I had to fight off the overwhelming urge to be sick.
“Do you believe in magic?” She asked me now in a serious voice.
“Well, I do like a good CAAARRRDDD TRIIICCCK” I bellowed as another contraction ripped through my body.
I was panting now. My son was on his way. I was overjoyed and scared in equal measure. Overjoyed because I had been waiting nine months to meet him, as per the human period, and scared because I wasn’t sure if my body could get through this.
There was a shimmer at the end of my bed and my husband appeared before my disbelieving eyes. He was so handsome, every time I looked at him I thought I would lose my mind.
“STEVEN! WHERE THE f**k HAVE YOU BEEN?” I yelled! Giving birth did not go hand in hand with being lady-like.
“I had some problems with rogues, but it’s all over now.” He smiled a sad smile and my breath caught. “I wouldn’t have ever missed this moment with you, my love.”
“The Alpha will be here soon, Luna.” The midwife assured me in a voice that I didn’t trust.
“What are you on about? He’s right THEEEERRRRREEEEE!” I pointed to my husband, but she wasn't interested in where I was pointing.
The foetal monitor, which was attached to my son, started to give off a warning sound.
“The baby is in distress.” The Midwife told me calmly. “We need to move you to the operating theatre right now. And for Goddess sake you need to calm down.”
Unexpectedly, the midwife looked in the direction of the little girl and nodded. So she could see her! Why on earth did she tell me she couldn’t? And then, to add to my already confused brain, she straightened up and walked out of the room, leaving me without a medical professional.
The little girl approached the bed and held my hand. Steven mirrored her action and held my other, I was so exhausted I could barely feel his grip.
“You just have to give one more push Sarah, and then Bethany is going to take Albi and look after him.”
I looked at my mate in utter bewilderment, “What do you mean? We’re going to take care of him. We’re not giving him up to a ch-”
The girl named Bethany put her hand against my forehead and within seconds I knew what had happened and what was going to be. This wasn’t any little girl, this was the Winter Witch. She was going to look after Albi, because Steven had been killed by Rogue fighters and I was about to die in childbirth.
I called on every bit of strength that I had, and gave one last almighty shove. Albi came into the world howling as a healthy newborn should.
I closed my eyes against the pain and the blackness that had started to invade my sight. When I opened them, I was standing next to Steven, my hand in his.
“Take good care of our baby.” I called out to Bethany. She nodded, and it was time for Steven and I to go.
