Chapter 22The red liquid was cool and thicker than it had looked from above. Instead of diving straight through it like a rock through water, Mavis slid through it more like a berry through a smoothie. The liquid layer was also deeper than Mavis had expected. It was many times deeper than the thickness of the slab—more like a dozen feet deep than a dozen inches. Good thing I took that breath. Just as Mavis felt her breath running out, she coasted free of the crimson liquid. The second she emerged in an open space, she inhaled deeply, filling her lungs with air. Or something. It wasn't like the air back home, that was for sure. She fell faster through it than she had through the red liquid...but nowhere near as fast as she would through just plain air. It was more like a parachute
