The morning newspapers and TV breakfast shows all led with the same story. The Independent journalist had met with a rubber wall of half-truths, defiance, contradictions and downright lies: all of which his astute expertise had used to produce an inflammatory reaction among his more bullish colleagues of the tabloid press. On the front page of one, in a contrived photograph, schoolchildren were shown wearing First World War gasmasks under the headline: GAS ATTACK ON THE WARWICKSHIRE FRONT, the by-line was attributed to Bill Backhouse.
