Jake had plenty of time on his hands before the doctors of Warwick Hospital felt confident enough to discharge him. He loved crosswords and often said to Heather that, with his cross-wired brain, he should be able to set the definitive unsolvable cryptic crossword. His passion, even for simple, quick puzzles in the tabloid papers meant that he had at least four daily papers within reach every day and, each day, his face peered back at him from one of an amazing range of photographs.
