NELSON’S POV
A pinge sound from my phone signaling a message brought me to a halt. I was on my way to go see her again but that was short-lived since my dad had requested that we meet shorty at the big square fast food to discuss important issues. I couldn’t waste a second thus I ignited my car and drove off promising myself to come back and see her. After all, I knew her room.
“You are late,” He was raving mad.
“The traffic is the reason dad. What is it that you wanted us to talk about?” I implored as I slid into a chair opposite him.
“I want to know every detail on how you are going on with the revenge plan. I can’t help but worry about your safety son. That girl is so dangerous,” He stated in a non-chalant voice.
“I am careful besides, he is not that bad as the way you always tell me,” I questioned my voice a little croaky.
“What did you just say?” He breath fire and before I knew it his palm hit my cheeks hard and I cussed out loud as a surge of pain shot through my entire body.
“You should listen to me. I am your father and I know everything about that girl. She was our house help once and she killed her cousin.” He pratted.
“I am sorry for doubting you father,” I tried to calm the fast thumping off my heart.
“Good, I am here for you son, forget the slap. You know how I can get out of hand sometimes, enjoy your beer son,” He gestured at the beer that was served to our private compartment few minutes before he hit me.
“Thanks dad,” I had no choice but to let the hitting me thing roll. He was my dad and as a good son and the heir of the company, I had to do as he says and I should take being disciplined by him positively.
“I am happy you took it upon yourself to avenge for the goods we lost and that innocent girl who was your friend back in the day. Remind me her name,” He urged.
“Mary, “I stated.
“Yea. By the way son, I have been meaning to ask you this,” He started sounding casual as possible and I forced a smile on my lips because this rarely happens.
“What?”
“I have never seen you with a woman. I am sorry if my temper scares you off at times. Don’t be afraid to introduce me to her,” He paused casting a look at me.
“I will dad, but as per now, I have no one in my life,” I retorted.
“Why son, we have money, cars and everything this Nairobi women thirst for,” He nagged.
“It is just that I have never met my perfect match,” I explained.
“What do you like in a woman son?” He blurted out.
“I woman with a nice body with that I mean ass, she must be beautiful and knows how to perform her bedroom duties well,” Before I knew it, I had just described Marian.
“Like father like son,” He shrugged and we ended up laughing. You could hardy tell there was a negative energy flowing between us few minutes ago.
His laughter changed at once when a certain thought floated in his mind I presume.
“Did you get her a phone?” His voice vibrated.
“NO, I forgot!” I quivered and before he could get to me, I ran off the hotel to make things right.
That man scared the hell out of me. In a short period of time, I was driving back to Elegance hotel.
I jumped out of the car and before I could make it to the stairs, I saw a very worried Marian sitting at the reception with a brown box beside her.
“What is not happening?” I asked attracting her attention.
“I am homeless,” She snapped back looking away.
“Why? What happened?” I asked again.
“I am homeless, which part of that word don’t you get it?” She repeated and I stretched out my hand to her.
“What?” She rolled her eyes.
“Do you remember when I said that I will be there for you?” I urged and she nodded
“I got you, let us go,” I pulled her up and she wanted to pick that up but I told her to let it be.
“I will sort everything out,” I winked mischievously as we walked to my car that was parked few feet away.
MARIAN’S POV
I was still angry at Noah for lying to me and I knew if I wouldn’t have left the hotel, I would feel even worse than the way in was feeling right now. I loved him, I was used to him, that I can’t lie. The fact that he was becoming a monster just made everything difficult for the two of us.
I was taking some days off and I hoped it would heal me to see him as this innocent person, not the murderer he really is. Nelson come at the nick of time because I was totally clueless on what to do next.
Probably I would start my job hunting this very day and hopefully by the end of it all I would be able to rent myself a cheap place in the outskirts of the city.
“I don’t want to be a burden,” I innocently stated but deep within me, I was feeling the opposite. He should spend on me because his family owes me ten years of jail yet I was innocent.
“You are my friend, what are friends for?” He asked starting the car.
“Thank you Nelson.”
“Sure,” He arched his lips upwards.
“Where are we heading to?” I asked after he drove past three streets.
“Be calm, we will get there soon.” He grinned and I relaxed.
He kept driving as we went past Karura forest. Despite our window’s being up, the cold air in the vicinity made me shiver with goosebumps lining my forearm.
“You can have my jacket,” He pointed out after throwing me a look. His leather jacket was on the backseat and I did as he had stated. I slid it on and in a few, I was warm all over again. He is such a gentleman.
The journey was kind of long and I turned up the stereo to break the silence that was in the car. Lord Horton the night we met was the song that played over and over floating our mind with sad memories.
I am not the only traveler
Who has not repaid his debt
I've been searching for a trail to follow again
Take me back to the night we met
And then I can tell myself
What the hell I'm supposed to do
And then I can tell myself
Not to ride along with you
I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met
I don't know what I'm supposed to do
Haunted by the ghost of you
Oh, take me back to the night we met
I remembered the first years in Kamiti prison when I used to cry over and over because of what Nelson’s dad did to me.
“I think I should change the song, I see tears in your eyes,” He mumbled and I nodded taking dry wipes to dry my tears.
He replaced the song with an uptown funk and it did the magic of restoring the happy mood in the car. Of course I had to shove those painful memories away from my mind.
I peeped through the window and I bubbled cheerfully,” Are we going to Two Rivers Mall?”
“That is right sweet Marian,” He nodded.
I pinched myself to ensure I was not dreaming because this reality was just unexpected. Two Rivers Mall is the biggest Mall in Nairobi and it has this good things and he was actually taking me there. Noah had always told me about it, the way he normally sees it on his way to Ruaka but he had never gotten the chance to hop in. His gang had talked about robbing the place but that was not going to be possible because the security was really beefed up. It would be impossible.
“Thank you, thank you,” I used every ounce of my energy to thank him and without knowing, I placed a kiss on his cheek. Even if it was awkward, He deserved it for treating me well.
“Let us go in, shall we,” He said after opening the door for me.
I nodded and walked in front of him just taking in the view of this small world within Nairobi County. Lights were everywhere and the architecture was that magnificent. The interior designers had done their best in the interior decors and I would just rate the place ten over ten.
“Where do you want us to tour first?” Nelson asked me with a smile plastered on his face.
“I don’t know,” I was literally overwhelmed.
“Thank God you have me, let us go this way,” He pointed and I followed behind looking around like the way I did when I was out of jail for the first time in ten years. Things have changed. The city has grown and many beautiful buildings have been erected.
“Shoot me!” I yelled when he held my hand as we entered the I-Phone store with the latest I-Phone phones and MacBook computers on display.
“Chill Marian, there is more to come when I hand you my credit card, but for now, pick the phone of your dreams because I am here to spend on you as your friend.” He announced and I felt tingles growing all over my body.
“This is a dream come true,” I repeated as I looked at the phones lying in front of me.
After a long time of deciding on the perfect one, I chose a grey I phone X which has three cameras. I know it is crazy expensive to own a phone like this in Kenya but it is a lifetime opportunity. The price of the phone alone can buy one a piece of land.
Nelson had offered to spend on me and I am not wasting that chance. I am sorry though because the phone will not make me forget what the family did to me and with that said and done, I was using this phone to make sure that he would go to prison sooner. Soon enough when I carry my revenge on him, then the family.
