Doctor's Visit

EMMELINE We sat in the waiting area after checking in with the receptionist. The clinic was full of couples, some of the men rubbing their women’s bellies and talking as if the babies would listen to them from the inside.  The sight made me smile, and it reminded me how much I had wanted a kid since I was a teenager. How I imagined a typical life with a big house, the dog and a white picket fence. Maybe three or four kids just running around in circles, chasing each other.  “They look happy, don’t they?” Amari asked, pulling me out of my thoughts as he squeezed my hand.  “They do.
