“Khob Khun Ka, Nurse Lexi,”
“You’re welcome, hun,” Lexi smiled at the seventh months pregnant teen girl, “See you later, Chai?”
“Chai, nurse Lexi,” she replied before leaving her clinic.
Lexi went back to her chart business when someone slammed her clinic’s door shut, startling her. She looked up and saw the red and raging Manuel, death glaring at her. “How dare you!?” he shouted.
Lexi scowled at him. He seemed gritty and angry, and she had no idea why. “Dare what?!” she asked back.
Manuel walked forward and slammed his fists on Lexi’s desk. “How f*****g dare you to report me to the board of directors!?” he grittily asked.
Lexi poised herself and arched her brow. “What!? I don’t understand what you are talking about!?” She had no idea what Manuel was talking about.
“They spoke to me today, and they gave me a warning!”
“And so what!? That’s not my problem!” Lexi hissed back.
“I know it's you! I know it's you who reported me harassing you!” Manuel snarled.
“Are you sure? I didn’t report you, Mr. Smith,” Lexi snorted, pausing as she recollected something. “But don’t you remember what you did to me days ago? Do you? Perhaps the people reported you on my behalf!” she fiercely replied.
Lexi suddenly remembered what had happened these past few days. She was rounding and checking on the kids when Manuel approached her and cornered her in the hallway. She tried to ignore him by dodging, but he insisted and continuously blocked her way back to her clinic. Manuel was about to say something to her when another nurse saw them and confronted him. Lexi didn’t tell the management about the incident, but eventually, the nurse said something, and that was why the man was fuming in his nose.
“You are a bithc!” Manuel spat.
Lexi smirked. “You got your warning, Mr. Smith, one wrong move, and your career is over in this company,” she said, standing up. She felt suffocated in the room, and though she wasn’t scared of him, she was afraid he might do something to her. She was at the end of her first trimester and didn’t want to stress herself since she had had blood spots lately. As a person in the medical field, she knew it wasn’t good.
Lexi took her bag and phone. She walked by the angry man and was about to open the door when Manuel yanked her arm. “Where do you think you are going?” he grittily asked as she faced him.
Lexi suddenly felt anxious as to how she saw the rage in his eyes. “Leaving you alone,” she sternly hissed before pushing him away. She took her time to open the door and dashed outside to escape the livid man. She then walked out, and before she could run away, Manuel tugged her again and restricted her against the wall. “Leave me alone!” she hissed.
“No! You are mine, Lexi!”
“Jesus Christ, Manuel!” she loudly said to get someone's attention. It was clear that the arsehole was assaulting her.
“No! I’ll get even, Lexi!” he hissed before pushing himself and trying to kiss Lexi in open daylight inside their building.
“Let go!! Asshole! You piece of a cunt!!” Lexi screamed, pushing Manuel away with all her might. Seconds later, his tight hold loosened as people came in to rescue her. One of the officers grabbed Manuel and slammed him on the floor.
“Ms. Lexi… are you okay?” One of the lady nurses, Lida, hugged her tight. Lexi let go of the tears as the shock quickly left her body. She nodded and embraced the nurse tightly. Soon after, other staff came out and checked on them. They looked and stared at silent Manuel being restrained by the securities. “Let’s get you inside, Ms. Lexi,” the nurse said.
“Y…yes…” she sniffled, yet before she could take a step, her knees buckled, and her vision turned dark.
Lexi woke up inside the familiar room of her clinic. She saw nurse Lida and doctor Yan standing next to her bed. “Hey…” she croaked, flickering her eyes.
“Lexi, darling,” Doctor Yan smiled at her. “How are you?”
“Doc…” Lexi hoarse, trying to get up from the bed. Lida helped her sit before giving her a glass of water. She drank it before smiling at the two. “Thanks. I feel better,” she answered, touching her belly. So far, she didn’t feel any discomfort down there.
“Does it hurt?” Doctor Yan asked.
Lexi shook her head. “No, it's fine,”
“Okay. I checked your vitals while you were asleep, and you seemed not well,” Doctor Yan said. “Are you taking your supplements?”
“Yes, doc. Maybe I was just shocked about what happened. That piece of sh…that t**t scared the s**t out of me,” she bluntly said.
“Lexi, he’s in jail right now. Don’t worry about him,” Doctor Yan assured. “It wasn’t only you. He harassed even the residents and children in this organization. After doing a quick investigation, we found out that even the old ex-pat nurses we hired for your spot had faced some s****l innuendos from him. We are doing our best to deport him right away,” she elaborately explained to Lexi.
Lexi inhaled a deep and heavy breath, “Thank God,” she exhaled. “I wasn’t afraid of him. I’m scared for my baby…” she mumbled, caressing her still flat tummy.
“I got you,” Doctor Yan held her hand. “I’ll take you home, and you can rest all day tomorrow and don’t go to work on the weekend this week. I’ll call Chida to take your shift,” she added.
“No, please. Let me work on Saturday. I’ll be fine,” Lexi objected. It’s Chida’s daughter’s birthday that weekend, and she wouldn’t want to take her time.
“But you need to rest,”
“I’ll take the day off tomorrow, Doctor Yan,” Lexi replied. “I’ll be fine by then. I only needed some sleep,” she smiled.
“Okay, then,” Doctor Yan nodded. “Let me know when you are ready to go home,”
“I am in five minutes,” Lexi said as she slowly went down from the bed. Lida helped her get her stuff, and Lexi and doctor Yan were inside the car in no time.
“Just tell me which way,” said the lovely doctor.
“Oh, it's five blocks away from here,” Lexi showed the way. Several minutes later, they arrived in front of the exclusive apartment Lexi rented. “Thanks, doc Yan. See you on Saturday,” she bade.
“See you and take a rest, okay?”
“Yes, doc,” Lexi nodded before turning around.
She waved hello to the guard before going inside the flat. It was a four-story building with an elevator and complete amenities. She was staying on the top floor, and her room was facing the seaside area of the city.
Lexi fished out her keys to get inside, and soon as she walked in, she dropped her bag on the table and slumped her body on the soft couch.
“Blimey…” she mumbled as she caressed her tummy. “How are you, wee one?” she asked as if the tiny baby in her body would answer her. “Such a rough day for you and mummy, eh?” she sneered. “Don’t worry. We will be okay…That Manuel cunt isn’t going to piss mummy off anymore,” she added. Lexi couldn’t help but smile as she felt her tummy grumble in hunger. It was as if her baby told her to stand up and get something to eat. “Yeah, yeah. Mummy is going to eat now,” she smiled.
Lexi got up and opened her fridge. She took the eggs and any veggies she bought yesterday from the shop. She made omelet, stir-fried the mixed veggies, and cooked rice, so she at least got full and stuffed.
About half an hour later, she was inside her bed, eating and watching some series that she had been following for some time. She wasn’t a fan of movies, but recently, she became obsessed with the vampire series that Lilia once showed her years ago.
She had been binge-watching it for the past few days, and that was one of the reasons she was lacking sleep. “Damn… I guess three episodes today for Alpha Xander and Luna Bella,” she mumbled, pressing the play button.
The following day, Lexi didn’t go to work as doctor Yan advised. She still woke up early, and after spending some time dry-heaving and vomiting again, she decided to go outside and walk by the seashore. After dressing in a swimsuit and sarong, she walked out of her apartment and headed to the nearby hotel where she first stayed in the city.
After ordering her drinks and breakfast, she laid her body on the beach chair to tan her pale skin. She had been staying inside the air-conditioned room lately that she didn’t get enough sunlight aside from walking to and from her work every day.
Lexi took her pregnancy book and began reading while slowly rubbing her tummy. Even though she was a nurse, she still wanted to enjoy the pregnancy experience she was having at the moment. After facing the reality of her being a soon-to-be-mum, she began appreciating her journey even if she was alone.
It had been three months since she arrived in the city, and also, she was twelve weeks pregnant. She sometimes wondered if one day she and Andrew would cross paths in the small town. She thought of what she might act or say once she saw him. “Well, whatever happens, we will be okay, my little one,” she mumbled.
