(Alexia POV)
"You're early?" I stopped in front of the familiar man who had a huge smile hung on his face.
"You are early as well." he pushed himself from the wall he was leaning against and walked towards me.
"B-but you came here e-earlier." I cursed as I stuttered. For some reason, just watching him come closer made my heart flip.
"I had nothing to do." he said before leaning close to my ear. "Besides, I couldn’t wait for the date" he then, let out a chuckle, pinching my red cheeks.
In one quick movement, I slapped away his hands and took a step back, covering my red cheeks.
"Wh-where do you plan to g-go?"
"I don't know. I am a visitor here and I would like to look around."
I looked at him with wide eyes. "Oh... I didn't know that. May I know where you are from?"
"The capital." he smiled, and for a moment it felt like the smile I saw earlier today.
"The prince." I whispered, making his eyes widen.
"S-sorry?"
"Oh- Um... nothing. It's just that the prince visited today and, um... you both have a little resemblance."
He laughed, making me feel even more embarrassed. Why did I say that!? I have gone mad! Of course, how can I compare Luka to the prince!?
"I am sorry. I feel stupid now." I covered my face with my hand, internally scolding myself.
"Oh... Um, don't be like that. You are not stupid. You have a really good guess actually."
I looked up at him confused. He was blushing a little as he scratched the back of his neck nervously. "The prince and I do look alike. Well, um, we are related."
My eyes widened at his confession. "Yo-you're royalty!"
I am mated to royalty! No, no, no. This is bad. I can't be mated to royalty!
"Do you hate that?"
"Yes!" I covered my mouth knowing I had messed up big time. "I mean, I don't hate you! I mean, I don't hate them either. It's just... I am not um.... fond of higher society that much."
I paused and looked up at him. His face held a hint of distress as he got closer to me. "B-but um you are a high lady?"
"How did you know that?" I looked at him with wide eyes. I have never told him where I was from, then how did he...
"Oh um your dressing. I can see that the quality is the finest. So I just guessed."
"Oh." I nodded my head, looking at my dress. Unlike yesterday night, today I dressed up pretty for a date and, of course, I put on one of the gowns that were presented to me to go to one of the balls I hated.
"I am actually not really good with my family. Maybe it's because of them that I don't like power and status. They look after pride more than blood and family and being born illegitimate doesn't help."
I unconsciously grabbed onto my skirts trying to take deep breaths and calm down.
"Oh then. Um... It's good then! I am not a member of high society as well." He smiled as I looked at him confused.
"But you said you were related to the prince."
"I am, but that doesn't mean we are family anymore..."
There was a brief silence between us.
"I am sorry I spoke of something you didn't wish to hear." I finally voiced. He probably had a worse life than me and here I am talking about my struggles.
"Let's just forget about that and get on with our date, OK?"
I agreed with him without any questions. Things were getting worse and we hadn’t even started our date.
"So, um, where do we go?"
I frowned and looked around, not having a single clue. "Um, well. There are a lot of things like amusement parks and all here, but all of them are closed now. Oh! I know a place! It's not a tourist site though. I discovered it when I was wandering around when I was a kid."
"Let's go there then."
But something I had not thought about was the distance. It was a tiring 2 hour walk from the spot we were in. And let's not forget to mention climbing the hill.
"Sorry, I didn't think about that." I muttered as he chuckled.
"It's fine for me. But are you OK?"
I am not. I wanted to say that, but I held my tongue. I only nodded my head with a smile.
While Luka was looking fine and energetic, I was sweaty and wheezing. Definitely not a pretty sight to see.
"Are you sure?"
"Ye-yea." This time I tried to use my words. It was hard, but I managed it.
He only chuckled before walking towards me. I squealed as he picked me up bridal style.
"Oh my god! Please stop! I am heavy!"
"Heavy? You are so light that it concerns me. You should actually eat more."
I blushed at his words. "I am not skinny."
I knew I was not skinny. My stepmother and sisters have always commented on my weight, always making sure I eat less and balance my weight so I don't look bad with the title of my father.
"You are." His words sounded as if they were final. For some reason, I couldn’t voice against it. It was as if it had a strong power. But he said he was related to the prince, so he must have some kind of authority in his voice.
"There!" I pointed as I suddenly recognized the familiar route. "We go left."
He nodded and followed my directions before we reached a small cave.
I tried to get down and he allowed me. After I straightened my skirt, I smiled, turning to him.
"Come on!"
I haven’t been here for a long time, so I was pretty excited as well. I discovered this place when I was living on the streets. It was when I was trying to find something to eat.
I entered the cave and it felt the same as before. The cave wall felt magical as the flowers on the wall lit up, giving the cave a little glow. Walking further inside, there was the small pond that glistened from the light of the flowers.
"Wow!" Luka commented as I smiled and turned to him.
"Isn't it! I have only come here 2 times and it was years ago. I want to visit this place again and I feel happy when it's with you."
My eyes widened at what I said. It somehow sounded cheesy and in love.
"Oh, I mea-" I paused as he stepped right in front of me. I watched as he looked at me with a small smile.
"That was not what I meant."
I frowned, confused by his statement.
"Sure, this place is beyond beautiful, but I wasn't talking about that. Your whole face lit up and you look much more beautiful when you are genuinely smiling", he grabbed both my hands and kissed them. "Even if it's not a date I planned out, I am..."
He paused midway, making me confused. I frowned as his eyes went to something behind me.
Everything after that happened so fast. In a split second, I was pushed to the side. Something roared and before I could register, it was sliced into half by a sword that suddenly appeared in his hand.
I could only do the only thing that I felt sensible to do. I screamed. I screamed long and loudly.
I only stopped when a body slammed against me.
"Shhh! It's ok! Don't worry. I will protect you."
Another roar came and we both looked ahead of us.
"There's more!" he grunted before standing up. He stood in front of me protectively, his sword ready to slice off another one of the monsters.
My eyes went to the dark side of the cave. There were sounds of loud breathing coming before a monster walked out.
"A-a snake!" I shouted, fear running through my spine. It was not an ordinary snake. It was huge, almost the size of a cave and it looked angry.
"I think we were in its lair and it's not happy we killed its kid." Luka growled as my eyes widened.
I looked at the dead monster and it was a smaller version of the monster we were fighting.
I knew we were at risk of being attacked by monsters, but this was not the dark forest! This is a reserved forest where many pack members live! The monster's breeding lair is too close!
"Alexia!" Luka shouted, gaining my attention. "The moment you get a gap, run! Run out of this place!"
Before I could reply, I ran to the monster. I sat at my spot not knowing what I should do. My whole body was frozen as I stared at the sight in front of me.
Luka was strong and fast as he attacked the monster.
"Alexia, run!" he shouted as I looked to the side. My eyes widened as I saw smaller versions of the monsters come out.
It was clear my mate couldn't handle this alone. Some of them turned their attention to me. I ran as fast as I could, but to my luck, I reached a dead end.
2 of the monsters were in front of me hissing. My instinct made me grab a stick and swing it around randomly. The snakes were coming closer, but just then a roar filled the air. The snakes' attention went to the scream and I used the opportunity to run away. But I stomped on the stick, making their attention once again turn to me.
It hissed and lunged forwards as I screamed and covered my face. But it never attacked. A wave of wind passed me and when I opened my eyes, the monsters were dead on the floor.
"L-Luka." my voice was shivering and my face was a mess from crying.
"It's ok. It's over." he was breathing heavily as he looked at me with a worried face. He was still standing in the fighting position, his sword dripping from the blood.
"You killed them all?" I knew he did it, but I was so shocked that it came out as a question to assure myself.
"Yes, there are no more monsters, so don't worry."
I didn't know why, but as soon as I heard that, my knees gave in. I fell to my knees as if my whole body had given away.
"Oh my god. That was..." I was shivering, my mind still filled with the terrifying scenes.
"Don't worry. It will be alright." I could see how awkward it was for him to comfort me.
"Yea... it's alright." I said, this time whispering to myself. I closed my eyes, taking deep breaths. When I calmed down, I looked at him. I couldn't help but let out a little laugh.
"I can't believe that happened." I didn't know why I was laughing, but I was genuinely happy. Maybe Kist because he was there to protect me.
"You were so good!" I said as I looked up at him. He was still standing, so I had to raise my face and look up. "Were you trained?"
"Ah... well, I am well...I am a knight." he said as I slowly nodded my head, processing it.
"Thank you for saving my life. Really. I mean, you were so amazing and perfect. I am sorry I am not so amazing as you and that I don't feel the mate bonds like you do, but I am so happy to be called your mate." I couldn’t help but smile.
He stared at me for a few seconds, his breath intensifying each time.
"f**k this!" he dropped his sword before walking toward me. I didn't have time to react as he grabbed me by my waist. He pulled me closer, his lips slamming into mine. I froze, my mind not processing what was happening. My body was supported by his hands as my hands dangled in the air.
His lips moved slowly, but it only lasted for a couple of seconds before he moved back. He looked distressed as he started to apologize.
"I am sorry- I di-"
Before he could say anything, my body moved on its own. In a single moment, we were on the ground, me on top of him, our bodies pressed together.
I kissed him fiercely and even though he was in shock, he returned the kiss with just as much heat and passion.
"Promise you will never hurt me."
"Until the sun rises in the west."
I don't know where this will lead us, but it was the first time I felt happy in a very long time. This time... Just this one time, I wanted to be selfish and be happy with him.
