Chapter 12Three days later, General Funston arrived in Veracruz at the head of the U.S. Army’s 5th Brigade 2nd Division, to replace the naval forces who had conducted the initial invasion. Funston’s brigade of some 7,000 men, along with the 3,000 Marines already ashore and another 3,000 on the way, brought the number of American troops in Veracruz to about 13,000. At the time, it was the largest concentration of Marines in the history of the Corps.
