Chapter FourThe coach came to a standstill and Ventura realised that it was at a signal from Lord Lynke. It had started to rain and, as he swung himself from the saddle to the ground, he took off his tricorn hat and shook the water from it. Then he climbed into the coach. He seated himself comfortably against the cushions and Ventura, as she felt would be expected of her, moved to the seat facing him with her back to the horses. “We are in for a wet night,” he said as the coach started forward again. “What time do you expect us to reach the inn, my Lord?” Ventura enquired. “In another two hours,” he answered. He stretched his legs out in front of him. “By Jupiter, but I am stiff. It is over a month since I have been on a horse and I feel as if all my limbs were made of wood.” Ventur
