Getting to class

703 Words
Not long after Reo left the apartment, I followed him out. Classes were starting soon—Transformation Basics kicked off at 08:00, and it was already 07:45. Armed with a school map and directory, I made my way through the dorm hallways. The sunlight streaming in through the open windows brightened the space, making the building feel less cold and imposing. For once, I didn’t feel like I was wandering through a stone fortress. I walked slowly, mostly because my eyes were glued to the map. Figuring out the exact route to my first class took some effort, but once I had it locked in my head, I tucked the map into my backpack. My bag was light—just a notebook, a pen (Jonathan’s gift and my favorite), and a few other bits and pieces. Thankfully, I’d gotten the hang of the dorm layout, so finding my way out wasn’t too hard. Less than five minutes later, I stepped outside, feeling pretty accomplished for someone who’s not great with directions. At this rate, I might even make it to class on time. Outside, I paused and took a quick look around. The dorm area was massive—basically the only structure around, surrounded by open space and the edge of the woods. Housing somewhere between 150 and 200 students, the dormitory was split into two sections: one for first- and second-years and the other for third- and fourth-years. The two wings were connected by a small bridge, which probably came in handy if you didn’t want to wander around outside at night. According to the map, the academic grounds were closer to the school gates, a good distance from the dorms. I hadn’t noticed this earlier, as Reo had led me on what I assumed was a shortcut when we first arrived. Not knowing the shortcuts myself, I had no choice but to follow the mapped path. Searching around, I spotted a narrow footpath of gravel and white pebbles that started between two wings of the dormitory to my right. This was supposed to lead me to the academic grounds, so I set off down the path. It curved around to the back of the dorm, where I was met with...a garden. Not just any garden, though—it was one of those fancy maze-like setups with hedges shaped into perfect circles. Of course, I had to go through it to reach the other side. Sighing, I stepped into the maze. Luckily, it wasn’t too complicated. I managed to get through without much hassle and was rewarded with the sight of the academic buildings ahead. Picking up my pace, I reminded myself that time was not on my side. The first building I passed was the administrative building. Though I needed to sort out my room situation, I decided to postpone it until lunch. Prioritizing my first class was the smarter move for now. Everything here seemed to be labeled BWA—as if whoever named the place needed everyone to know they were obsessed with those initials. The first building, BWA 1, housed beginner-level classes for first-years and a few mixed-level sessions. Subjects taught there included Transformation Basics, Physical Training 001, Werewolf Physiology I, Basic First Aid for Werewolves, and Wolf Calling After First Shift. The second building, BWA 2, was dubbed the Theory Hub and primarily served second-years. However, a few of our classes were held there as well, such as Werewolf Mythology, History, Basic Etiquette and Leadership (How to Live in a Pack), and Environmental Influences on Our Nature. BWA 3 and 4 were for advanced students—third- and fourth-years—and hosted elite-level classes. These included Elite Combat Training, Advanced Etiquette and Leadership, Diplomacy and Inter-Pack Relations, Strategic Warfare and Defense, Advanced Healing and Medicine (for healers), Specialized Abilities, and Supernatural Politics. Hunting and Tracking classes were the only advanced lessons occasionally open to first-years, and even then, most were exclusive to upperclassmen. What I couldn’t figure out was whether we could pick higher-level classes as electives. Jonathan had been doing Specialized Abilities by the second half of his first year, which was unusual. Thinking back on it now, I couldn’t help but wonder—why?
