Harris

1939 Words
“You need to find a wife, grandson. I am getting old.” It was my grandma’s request when I visited her in the hospital. She’s almost a hundred years old and is practically bed-ridden at this point. I didn’t speak. I don’t want to get married yet. All the more get pressured to do so. And besides, marriage is a huge commitment and I couldn’t do that. I’m more of a person who wants to have fun. Go to clubs and have s*x with girls then leave them the next day. No feelings. No emotions. No drama. No commitment. “You have to stop playing, Harris. You’ll badly regret it when you finally meet the one.” Grandma added with her frail and hoarse voice. I like that she’s concerned about my future, because that’s who she is. She always sees to it that everyone is settled before she goes. And I think that’s why she’s telling me to get married every day that I see her. But then I’m just twenty-seven. I’m at the peak of my life and I don’t want to waste it to a girl who I know would only like me because I am part of the royal family. That’s always been the downside of this power. That’s always been the downside of this reputation. I don’t know who’s real or who’s just showing me kindness because I am a royalty. I don’t know who sincerely wants to be my friend and not just want the benefits of having me as a friend. I could say that my family and reputation has caused me to have trust issues among the people around me. Except for Timothy, I guess. Because he’s served us all his life and has technically dedicated all his time in this world for us. “Do you have a girlfriend?” Grandma asked again. I shook my head to her dismay. Girlfriend? Give me break! I have never found a decent girl who doesn’t batter her eyelashes at me whenever she sees me walking inside the club. I have never found a girl decent enough to know me on the inside instead of wanting just a good and quick f**k. Until I found her, I’m never going to have a girlfriend. “Why?” Grandma pondered. Now she’s looking at me like the most pitiful human being she’s seen in her ninety-nine years of existence. I shrugged. “No girl has ever impressed me,” I replied. Grandma sighed and nodded. “Or maybe you don’t want to look for one.” I stared at her and chuckled weakly. “I believe that when the right girl comes, she’s going to come to me even without me finding her.” Grandma shook her head and laughed like I told her some kind of an old joke. “Grandson, if every right one comes even without searching, then no one should be divorcing right now. Everyone should be happy.” She explained.” So, no. I don’t believe that the right one comes along voluntarily. You also have to work hard and find for her, Harris. And if she’s the one, she’s never going to leave you.” Grandma’s words linger in me for days after my visit. Usually, all her words don’t hit me as hard as her last words are. I am not entirely sure why, but when I walk up the club that night, I had a glimpse of the main reason why she said those words to me. “I don’t really understand why these girls swoon at Harris. I’m a royalty, too!” Justin whined as we sat on the couch we had reserved last night. Travis laughed before gulping down the shot glass of whisky in front of him. “Dude, we’re not the Prince of the Louxuria.” He blurted and it all made us laughed. I leaned on the couch and raised my hand on the arm rest as I slouched. This is what I always do. This is what we always do. Right after work, we would come here and unwind. It has always been that way, except today. Because the moment I laid my eyes on this blondie, I knew I was already drawn to her. “Even the women in the office swoon after him! They all try to impress him,” Justin still isn’t done with his sentiments. The woman was not wearing anything attractive at all. She doesn’t expose a lot of her skin, just enough to bait a poor man like me. And damn, the way she smiles as she tucks her hair behind her ear finishes this whole battle. I watched her silently as she laughed with her friends. They’re drinking some kind of girly cocktails when I noticed her friend stare at me, and then to her I believe she says, “Sam, that hottie has been looking at you.” Sam. So her name is Sam. I wonder if she’s going to act like every ordinary girl to me. Will she try to impress me? Because hell knows, I’m praying she will and I will gladly oblige to everything that she’s going to say. I saw how her other friend encouraged her to talk to me. Sam looked at me and I was grinning. But then she shook her head before laughing. “No way! Those types only like one night stands…” and then she never looked at me again. Fuck. Did I just get rejected? By a girl, perhaps? “Come on, Harris. Let’s dance.” Justin and Travis stood up and got ready to weather the sea of people. There is an incredible amount of people inside the club tonight but everyone did not forget to greet me when I walked towards the dancefloor…everyone except Sam. I looked at her as her friends started to drift away from her because of the movement of the crowd. I began to walk towards her and at least try my moves. “You also have to work hard and find for her, Harris.” Grandma’s voice lingered in my brain as I dashed towards Sam. I was so determined to do my best and impress her. And so the huge swarm of people must have been in my favor because someone accidentally bumped into her making her fall back…and luckily, I was there to catch her. Electricity almost consumed me the moment I held her close to me. I have never felt this way, and I don’t intend on not feeling it again. “Sorry.” She said as she got away from me.  I looked at her as she was looking at my face. Up close, she was even more beautiful. Up close, I can see how green her eyes are. “Are you alright?” I asked her back.  She nodded. “Yep. No prob.” She said before she continued dancing in the middle of the crowd. I danced behind her and made it clear to everyone that this girl is mine. No one is going to claim her tonight and, if lucky, for the rest of her next nights but me. I take claim on this girl. As the music changed, someone bumped into her again making her fall back to me chest once more. Ah, heaven! “Oops.” I said as I placed my hands on her shoulders. “Are you alright?” She narrowed her eyes at me like she was examining my face. But then it also let me stare at her beautiful face. Now I know that she’s not a white as I thought she was. She has a bit of a tan in her skin. Her eyes are the clearest green eyes I’ve seen in this lifetime. And her lips are probably the most attractive of them all. “I…I’m…I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” I find it cute that she stammered. It meant that I affect her at least.  I grinned. “It’s fine.” Now I don’t want this conversation to end like this. I bit my lip and nodded at her. “Haven’t seen you around here.” She flashed one of her sweetest smile. “I…my friends and I don’t really party.” She said with her sweet voice and a different accent from the people around here. “You’re American?” She nodded. “I thought so. It’s because of your accent.” I smiled and continued to dance. “Where in the US?” I asked as I basically grinded on her body. She bit her lip and danced with me. “New Jersey.” She practically yelled at me because of the loud sound of music. New Jersey. I’ve been there but I won’t tell her yet. I wonder if she’s from Atlantic City or any of the beach side. Her skin is tan and I believe she fits the standard of a beach girl. “How old are you?” I asked her as I brushed my lips against her ear. She moved closer to the point that her back is leaning on my chest. Hot damn! She gave me a quick glance. “Twenty-three,” she replied. “Studying?” I asked again. She laughed and suddenly, the sound of her became even more melodious to my ears. “I just finished my exams. I’ll be graduating soon,” she uttered in her American accent. Now that makes me wonder how long she has been here because she hadn’t adapted to the British accent at all. “I’ve lived here for four years.” She answered like she knew what I had in mind. “You never used British accent?” I asked. She wrinkled her nose and shook her head. “I’m more comfortable with my own accent.” She said. “And besides, I’m going back to the States after I graduate.” Hell…she doesn’t have to leave Great Britain. Not now that I have laid my hands on her. Or maybe I could go to New Jersey? Shit. What am I thinking? “You want to go and sober up?” I asked her. She shook her head and just continued dancing. “Tonight is celebration night. I don’t want to be sober!” She yelled making everyone who heard her look our way. I immediately posed protectively as I placed my arms around her. They all know me, so they all backed off and just minded their own businesses. “For sure, you’re not sober right now.” I told her as I spun her to face me. She laughed at me as she caressed my face and pulled me in for a searing kiss. Holy hell!
