Deal

The day was going by so slowly, something was not right; she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching her and that something was not adding up. They had a lot of men with gunshot wounds, she couldn’t understand why the police wasn’t contacted and nobody was there to make a report just like the protocol states.       She was feeling uneasy, she was sweating, she was hungry and she needed some sleep. The only thing that she could think about was her mom. She went outside and made the phone call. Talking with her mom was the only thing that made her feel calm again.       The hours went by and the night was falling over the city. Out of nowhere she got a pager saying that she was needed in doctor’s Lambert office. Having her doubts and wanting answers fast, she went there. He was the chief anyways. She went near the door, knocked and waited.       “Come in! “Said the doctor and she went inside. When she looked at the chair in front of the doctor there was a handsome, tall man with eyes black as charcoal and brown hair.       “Sorry, sir! I didn’t know you were busy. I just got paged saying that I should report here, I didn’t want to disturb. I’ll come by later.”       “No, it’s ok, dear. Come! I was the one who paged you. We have something to discuss, I would like to ask of you to be open minded and imagine that this will help you and me so much more.       “Sure what’s it about?” A bit scared and a bit curious she sat down near the tall, handsome guy and waited curiously for the doctor to start talking.       “Before I start to discuss anything with you, I would like you to sign this paper.  It states that you are not allowed to discuss anything that we will be talking in this room outside of it.”        She took that piece of paper and started reading it. How could this be possible? The paper stated her name, her date of birth, her Social Security number, every important information about her life, where she lived and what was her status in that hospital. A bit baffled she linked her eyes with the doctor’s.       “It’s ok, dear. Just sign so we can go on and discuss everything over.” With half of heart she signed the document and then the doctor starts talking       “First of all, this gentleman here is the brother of the guy you saved this morning. He was very impressed by you braveness.”        “My name is Nikolas.” He interrupted the doctor. “I wanted to thank you in person for what you did for my brother” and with that he remained silent.       The doctor smiled and continued. “I would like to propose you a partnership if you want. As you can see I’m getting old and I would like  for my knowledge to not be lost. I'd like you to be my apprentice and I would like you to become my right hand.” Her eyes were wide open and her lips slightly parted.       “Um, how do I say this? Let’s say that in my spare time I work at a private clinic, but no so legal.” Her breath became ragged.        “There is no easy way to say it. I’m the mafia’s doctor and I want you to become the next one. I’ll give you time until tomorrow to make up your mind. Be sure that you will get paid very; very well, you’ll be protected from any harm legally or physically. The facility has the top of the line equipment and not least I would teach you all I know.”       She was speechless. Her? To become the mafia’s doctor? But how? Why her? Like doctor Lambert read her mind he said.     “I’ve been watching you over the years. You’ve got brains, looks and most off all you’ve never lost your heart and soul in this jungle. To be sincere, I’ve had chosen Ann at first because she has no trouble on walking on skeletons and she would had adjusted easier being there, but she does not have what you have. She does not have the passion for people. She sees them like corpses already, even though she could save them.”       With a quizzical look on her face she asked. “So why not go with her all the way, if you’ve already talked with her? Did she say no and you came to the second best?”       The doc started laughing and even Nikolas was grinning. “Told you she was fire. No, dear. She said yes. You would work with her also. The difference is that you will be the doctor of the mafia’s family and her for the crew.”       “I see. So that’s why the police wasn’t announced this morning.” The doctor nodded.       “Well, I’ll need some time to think about it.” Said Elle while walking to the door.       “I’ll need your answer until tomorrow Elena and don’t forget that you signed the document. You can’t talk about it with no one.”       “Since when does the mafia do things legally?”       “Since we are tired to run after the people that are against us. It’s easier this way. We are in 2020 after all.” Said Nikolas without even moving a muscle. “Don’t get me wrong we still k*ll.” And winked at her.           “I’ll have your answer as soon as possible. Excuse me!” and she left.       “Do you think that she will say yes?” Asked Nikolas curios.       “Hard to say, I hope she does. If you saw what she did on your brother you would build her a statue. I didn’t even know she operated on him. Only after I saw his chart and went over the videos of the surgery.”       “Hm, then get her. Do whatever you need to get her. We need her.”       The two of them continued discussing about the crew members that were still in the hospital while Elle was in her secret hiding place.       While she was in the second year of her residency and after losing her necklace she had a hard night when one of her patients died on her. It was a lovely old lady about 70 years old, with a small mouth, blue eyes and petit frame. She and her husband were in an accident. While they were walking home a part of the roof of an old building that was being restored got loose and feel on them. The husband only had a broken leg and a mild concussion, but her, poor woman, was losing a lot of blood internally. With no time wasted she was wheeled into the operating room, but before she was put under she took Elle’s hand and said.   “If I don’t get out alive , give my heart to my husband. He has a bad heart, he needs a transplant and we are a match. Do this for me, please. I love him so much! He is the man of my life.” Elle was shocked. The love in her words left her stunned. Unfortunately, the old lady’s wounds were too extended and died. But Elle knowing her wish said.       “She’s a donor! She said she wanted to donate her heart to her husband.” Everybody was baffled; there was no protocol for something like this. They put her on assisted ventilation and went to deal with the problem. In the end the husband got the heart. He would always have a part of his loved one with him.       After the transplant Elle started thinking that she could only dream at that kind of love. Crying for her patient and the events that led to that, she started roaming around the hospital when she found a ladder. She had no idea where it would lead. She climbed it and found a small part of a roof in shape of a triangle that was between two walls. The space was empty, no windows so nobody could see her. Her perfect hideout. She started shouting and crying the loss of the two people.       As always she went to that place to calm her nerves. Should she do it? Why not? She never did something with her life except her job. The little friends she had were mostly from work and her parents were starting to get along better or that is what her mom would say.       Then she thought of that old couple, in all this time she never found a guy who she could give her all to. She wanted that so badly, but no luck. In that moment she realized, all her life was merely about survival. She had to do something for her. Doctor Lambert said she would be safe; she would do what she loves, practicing medicine and could make tons of money to buy her mom all that she wanted.       Her mind was set; she was going to do it. She started walking to doctor Lambert’s office. Not paying attention where she was going, she bumped into Ann.       “Ooo, slow down! Who died? “Said Ann laughing.       “Nobody, I’m in. In coming with you and doctor Lambert.”       A bit surprised and not knowing that she would come with them she said. “Yeahhh, b*tch! It was about time for you to get out of your shell” And she hugged Elle with so much love. Although they were total opposites Ann loved Elle, she was friends with her for her kindness. She loved having Elle around like a big sister who would nag her when she would go off the rails. She had gotten used to her bubbly ways.       “Yeah, I need to speak to doctor Lambert first.” And with that she started running again. She arrived at the doctor’s office the next minute. She stopped to catch her breath and she knocked at the door. She did not even wait for an answer, she went in.       “I’m in! I want to be part of the team! But I have a condition.” Both men were shocked, none saying a single word. At first Nikolas thought she was going to ask for more money, typical woman. Except for his wife he also had bad impression of women. But when he heard what she wanted he smiled.        “No matter what happens to me or our partnership I want you to guarantee me that you will keep my family safe! They are the only thing I treasure most!”         “DEAL!” Said Nikolas extending his hand. “We’ll see you tomorrow. And don’t worry about your hospital schedule. We’ll take care of it.”       “Thank you!” And with that she left.       “She is an interesting one. I hope you know what you’re doing!”          It was done, she had done it! For the first time in her life she was in control she was doing something for herself. She couldn’t believe it; she was going to become the new doctor for the Mafia, incredible! She could feel her heart pumping and the heartbeat in her ears. Tomorrow was going to be an interesting day.           Although, Dr. Lambert was not so happy. What did he just do? She was good in her field, she was the best, nobody could stop her, she was one of the few who puts soul and sweat in what she does but was it worth it? Was it worth it for him to destroy her pure soul for the idea of having someone who could go on with his legacy? It was done; he couldn’t do anything to change it. She had made her choice, she could have refused. He could just wait and see what tomorrow would bring.
