The beginning

It was a rainy night and, like always, Elle was clocking out late and tired from a long shift. Being a trauma surgery resident was her dream from when she was young. Since she can remember she wanted to help people. Not knowing that for this dream she would have to make so many sacrifices.     Not only that she had to leave her parents from a young age to go and study medicine to another country, but wanting it so bad she lost a lot of time studding and never had the time to make friends or boyfriends. Yeah, can you imagine being a virgin at 25 years old?     She was an only child so any time she would finish a shift she would call her parents on her way home. This night was no different or so she thought.     "Hey, mom! How are you? Is it too late? If you want me to call you tomorrow?" for her mom nothing was more important than her child.     "Hun, no! It's fine! Just a bit tired. How was your day? Are you going home or out with some friends?" Being so tired after a 36 hours shift the only thing she wanted to do was to take a shower and sleep.     "Home, Food, Bed, Sleep!" she chuckled. "How's dad?" Her mom got silent. She did not know if she should tell her daughter or to stay silent.     "Mom, come on! I know something is wrong. Just for once let me help you!"     Her mom sighted and said “He is sleeping now. He had a long day. He came home, eat and went to sleep. We are fine. We miss you and love you!"     Elle knew that she was hiding the rest, but was grateful for the fact that her mom talked a bit. Since her dad got sick, like 10 years ago, he changed. Not with her, but with her mom. For him she was still his little princess and would bring her the moon if she would ask. But with her mom was another story. He would not beat her, but when he was stressed with work he would get drunk and abuse her verbally.      "I'm sorry mom! Love you too! I can't wait to see you! I'm going home! Bye, Mom!"     "Bye, baby!" And with that she continued her way home. She was driving slowly because it was pouring outside and to be frank she was so tired that she thought better safe than sorry. She stopped at a stop light, singing to the radio to try to stay awake, when she heard a squeaking noise, like a car without tires being driven. And out of the blue she saw a black car speeding before her. And then just a BOOM! A big crush. For a second everything was dead silent she could not hear anything.     Her instinct kicked in and she drove in the direction of the car and found it! Once a super hot, black sports car that costs a fortune now was totaled but she still hoped she could save whoever was in it. Without thinking she jumped out of the car and started looking. And she saw him. A big, muscular man, somewhat handsome, all dressed in black with blood oozing everywhere!     "Sir, can you hear me? I need you to wake up so I can help you!" He started mumbling things that she could not understand and then he opened his eyes! His eyes were so blue like the sky; any girl would have lost herself in them, but not her. She was there to save him.     His left leg was in an ungodly position and he had a big gash over his left eye. But with all his injuries there was too much blood.       "I'm going to assess your injuries. Oh, Sir!" And then she saw it. The crash did not make him bleed so profusely, it was the bullet holes. And his hand caught her wrist.     "Sir, I'm a doctor let me stop the bleeding and call an ambulance!" Without arguing more he nodded and she started working. For him she was something from another world, an angel you can say. He would be in and out of it but every time he would open his eyes she would be right there looking at him with her emerald eyes.     When the ambulance arrived she told them the vitals and let them get on with everything. But before the crew could leave he extended his hand wanting to reach her but without knowing his hand tangled with her necklace and the chain broke and before he could say anything, he was out again.     The police that came at the scene asked her a lot of questions. "Miss what's your name? Why did you touch him? Get down!" but with only one look and some word they all stayed silent and let her go.     "I told you! I know nothing! I just wanted to help! I'm a f*cking doctor, that's who I am. I just finished my 36 hours shift at the hospital down the road, the ambulance techs can vouch for me. I just want to go home and sleep. Arrest me after if you still want to." After that she got in her car and drove home.      They had never expected for a woman to have so much power in her words. Her eyes were menacing and her tone of voice firm.         When she arrived home, she took a quick shower and that was it for her. She slept until the next day at noon when her phone would not stop ringing. It could not be the hospital; she had 2 days free from work. When she looked at the caller ID she started laughing. Her best friend was calling surely to blabber about her last conquer. But she did not mind at all. She liked hearing her stories          "Hey, b*tch! Why haven't you answered my texts? Let's get coffee!"      "Ann, easy! I had a long shift! Let me change and I'll come and get you. See you in 30 minutes."     Ann was a petite girl, with olive tones, small waist, black short hair and black eyes. A small nose and plump lips. She was beautiful and smart. She was also a resident at the same hospital as Elle.     "You better!" and hung up. Elle got up from the bed and went to shower. In there she started replaying the events of last night in her head when she realized. HER NECKLACE! It was gone. It had been a gift from her parents. She always thought that that necklace was the reason she was protected from the evil in this world. She had it when she left the hospital, surely, she had lost it trying to save that man.        Maybe she could go and ask about him at the hospital and maybe he has it or she could go at the crash scene. In her heart she knew that it was gone for good. She went to the mirror; the shifts at the hospital haven’t been good to her. A little mascara, some foundation, blush, some pink lips and she put on a flowy dress and her favorite nude sandals. She was ready but something was missing, her necklace with the little shiny cross as a pendant.       “I only hope that it protects you as it has protected me all these years! And maybe someday, when you won't need it anymoreyou will bring it back to me.” And she went out the door.
