Chapter Twenty-Three The Human Fountain I read, with some skepticism, Mark’s note regarding having to visit his ailing mother. There have been too many last minute cancellations in our eight-month relationship, especially since he considers us to be ‘practically engaged’. I am a buyer for a large chain and consider myself quite independent. Since he cancelled, I decided to invite an old friend, Betty, over for dinner. Betty had no sooner arrived than she commented on a picture of Mark in my living room. When I said we were ‘practically engaged’, she flashed a brief strange look, composed herself and said, “He looks like a handsome guy.” “You know him, don’t you?” With some prodding, she said they were dating hot and heavy until she questioned not seeing him for several days at a time.
