Chapter 9 Kes watched the gray creature rise, turn gracefully, and head toward the east. How can it fly without moving its wings? He licked his fingers clean—he might have let his curiosity get the better of him, but he’d still eaten—then whistled a summons. A black-feathered corvid flew to him and settled on his extended arm. Kes fed it a bit of meat he had set aside for it, then stroked a finger over the sleek head and looked into the yellow eyes. “Follow, little sister. Learn where it goes, then return and tell me.” The corvid gave a hoarse caw and rubbed its head against his finger before taking off to obey his order.
