Gwendolyn sat down dejectedly on a small rock a few meters away from her father's company. She felt like dying. She was tired of life. * Maybe I should just end my life, * Gwendolyn thought silently. *But I don't want to go to hell. If I kill myself, won't I end up in hell?* Gwendolyn thought with a sigh. Her ringing phone brought her out of her thoughts. She reluctantly brought out the phone from her bag and answered the call without looking at who the caller was. " Hello. Gwendolyn Malcolm speaking. How may I be of help to you?" Gwendolyn said with a sad tone. " Gwendolyn, how did it go with you reporting to work late?" Wilson asked from the other end of the phone. " I was sacked," Gwendolyn replied tearfully. " what? How? Is it not a family company?" Wilson asked in confusion. " I'm tired of living. I want to die," Gwendolyn said tearfully. " Don't you dare try anything funny! Where are you?" Wilson said and asked at the same time. " I'm on the highway that leads to my father's company," Gwendolyn replied sincerely. " Okay stay put and don't try anything funny! I will be there in a jiffy, " Wilson said with urgency. " Okay," Gwendolyn replied with a sigh and ended the call. She could not help but wonder why her father was treating her like a stranger. Gwendolyn was so lost in thought that she did not notice the car that was parked in front of her. The door of the car opened and Wilson came down from the car. He walked towards her and tapped her gently on her shoulder to bring her out of her thoughts. Gwendolyn looked at Wilson with her swollen, red, teary eyes. " My father sacked me," Gwendolyn said while sobbing. " Shhhh! It's okay. I'm giving you a job in my company," Wilson said with a smile. Gwendolyn suddenly stopped crying and looked at Wilson in disbelief. " You are joking, right?" Gwendolyn asked in disbelief. " Of course not. I'm employing you in my company. You can start work tomorrow, " Wilson said with all seriousness. " Oh my goodness! Thanks so much," Gwendolyn said excitedly and gave Wilson a bone-crushing hug. " Oh sorry about that. I was too excited," Gwendolyn apologized. " It's okay. I understand, " Wilson said with a smile. " Do you mind if I drop you off? " Wilson asked politely even though he was not ready to be turned down. " Of course, I don't mind. Thank you so much, sir, " Gwendolyn said trying to be formal with him since he would be her boss. " Sir? Please don't call me that. It makes me feel like I'm too old. Just call me by my first name, " Wilson told Gwendolyn. " But you are going to be my boss. I can't address you by your name, " Gwendolyn said pointedly. " Fine. You can address me as 'sir' at the office but address me by my name whenever we are not in the office, " Wilson told Gwendolyn after some moments of silence. Left for him, he would have preferred Gwendolyn to call him by his name even in his office. That was because he had fallen in love with her the very moment he saw her. But he did not want to scare her away. So, he decided to take things slowly. " Okay, " Gwendolyn replied with a smile. Wilson led her to the car, got into the car, and drove off. She thanked him as soon as they got home. " It's nothing. I will do it again if I have the chance, " Wilson told her sincerely. But Gwendolyn did not get the underlying meaning of what he said. She just gave him a smile and waved at him until his car was out of sight. She resumed work the next day at Wilson's Company. She was surprised to see that the company was bigger than that of her father. She promised herself to work hard to retain her job. She was given the post of personal assistant to the CEO, in person of Wilson with a mouth-watering monthly salary and other incentives. What started as a platonic relationship, soon became a romantic relationship when Wilson asked her to be his girl six months after she resumed work with him. Gwendolyn agreed to his proposal and they started dating. Things were relatively going well with Gwendolyn and her family. After five years of dating, Wilson decided to take their relationship to the next level. So, he asked her to be his wife. Gwendolyn was very excited. She accepted to be his wife. The wedding date was fixed and preparations were made for the wedding. Gwendolyn was jolted to reality when she felt someone tapping her shoulder continuously. She smiled when she saw that it was her best friend. " What are you still doing on the bed when it's almost time for your wedding? Everyone has already gone to the venue," Jennifer, Gwendolyn's friend said frantically. She and Gwendolyn became friends when she started working with Wilson. Their friendship grew to the extent that they became inseparable. " What do you mean by 'it's almost time for my wedding? " Gwendolyn asked in confusion. That was because she had woken up very early due to anxiety. Jennifer did not utter a word. She just pointed to the clock beside her bed. Gwendolyn followed her action with her eyes. She gasped when she saw the time. It was forty minutes to her wedding. She jumped out of bed and rushed into the bathroom with the speed of lightning. In no time, she was out of the bathroom. She quickly got dressed and Jennifer helped her with her makeup. Gwendolyn did not hire a makeup artist because Jennifer was very good at doing the job. By the time Jennifer was done with her makeup, Gwendolyn could not help but admire her new look. From the mirror, Gwendolyn noticed that Jennifer was giving her a sad look. " Jenny, you don't look happy. Are you okay?" Gwendolyn asked in concern when she saw the sad look on Jennifer in the mirror. " I'm fine, " Jennifer quickly replied with a forced smile. Gwendolyn wanted to say something but Jennifer beat her to it. " Let's get going before you miss your wedding, " Jennifer said, subtly changing the topic. Gwendolyn knew that Jennifer was changing the topic but she did not have the time to probe her to tell her the truth since she was also late for her wedding. She just nodded, took her purse, and left the room. Jennifer sighed in relief as soon as Gwendolyn left the room. She was happy that Gwendolyn did not question her further even though she knew that she was hiding something. Jennifer quickly left the room to meet up with Gwendolyn. By the time, Gwendolyn got to the car park, she noticed that her driver and the security guards were giving her that same pitiful look Jennifer was giving her earlier. But she decided not to dwell on it since she was already late for her wedding. She got into the car alongside her friend and asked the driver to speed up the car. The driver did as he was instructed. Some minutes later, Gwendolyn and Jennifer arrived at the venue of the wedding. Gwendolyn suddenly started having cold feet as soon as she got out of the car. " Let's go in, " Jennifer told Gwendolyn sadly. Gwendolyn was confused. * What's going on? Why is everyone giving me a pitiful look instead of a happy look? * Gwendolyn asked herself silently while she made her way into the hall. She got the shock of her life when she got into the church. Before the priest was her supposed groom exchanging marital vows with another lady. Not just another lady but her stepsister! " Wilson, what the hell is going on? " Gwendolyn asked in confusion. She could not understand what was going on. She initially thought it was a prank. But Wilson's words proved her wrong. " I'm sorry Gwen, I won't be getting married to you today. I've found love in the arms of Stephanie and she is the one I want to spend the rest of my life with." Wilson said as he drew Stephanie close to him. Gwendolyn felt like her world had come to an end. She was extremely hurt when she realized that no one looked the least shocked at what was happening.
