After spending a nervous half hour trying to decide what to wear for dinner with Deacon, Max eventually settled on his first choice, dark slacks and a blue shirt. He checked how he looked in the mirror, consciously sucking in his gut. “I was teasing you, yesterday,” Jack said from the doorway. “You have nothing to be ashamed of. Your hair on the other hand…” Max glanced in the mirror. “There’s nothing wrong with it.” Jack grinned. “Got ya. Now get out of here or you’ll be late.” “Kids,” Max grumbled as he made certain he had his keys and wallet. “What are you doing while I’m gone?” “Meeting Karen at the library in forty-five minutes to study. And this time, I really am going there. See you later.” Jack gripped Max’s shoulder. “Have fun, and smile. You are not going to your execution.”
