-Malena POV-
We quickly enter the old motel room.
“Go take a shower first.” I say to Dayton handing him the cedarwood soap and he runs into the bathroom.
We drove for three hours. It is now midnight. This room was paid for us by one of Vera’s contacts. Her family was some that revolted against Hendrix when he took control of the pack. She is amazing, she took care of everything I needed. I really hope she’ll be okay.
I look under the night table where I was told was going to be a burner phone with another set of keys, another cedarwood soap, a gun, and an envelope with money in a tote bag. We use cedarwood soap because is far from anything Dayton and I would smell like and it’s strong. It will hide us from Hendrix and from his enemies since we won’t be smelling like our pack.
“There it is.” I whisper looking at the tote bag. I don’t touch it yet. I need to take a shower first to get my scent mixed with the cedarwood soap first.
When Dayton is done, I take his zipped-up clothes from the backpack, and without touching it, I handed it to him. He gets dressed and comes out.
“Okay, sit here and don’t move. Don’t touch anything that will get our old scent on you, okay?” I tell him sitting him on a corner chair.
“I won’t touch anything mommy.” He says.
“Okay.”
I quickly go take a shower and use the special soap. When I am done, I carefully open the bag with my new clothes and put them on.
I come out and Dayton is right where I left him. I go and take the tote bag with the phone, gun, soap, money, and keys.
“Let’s go.” I say taking Dayton’s hand.
I leave everything else I brought with me and we head outside to the parking lot.
“But mommy, that’s not our car.” Dayton says.
“It is now baby.” I say dangling the new set of keys.
We get in the now black car.
“Now Dayton, tell me. Is our old scent strong?”
Dayton smells the air.
“It is really faint. It’s still there but we smell different now.” He says.
“Good.”
A werewolf can smell his mate and offspring easily. I truly hope he is not able to find us but I am scared.
We head out.
I can see that Dayton is tired.
“Baby, you can lie the seat back so you can sleep, sweetheart.” I tell him.
“But aren’t you tired too, mommy?”
“I’m okay. I’ll sleep when we get where we are going to.” I say.
It is risky, but it’s the only way. Hendrix thinks I’m a fool, so he will think that I am going through the safe way. But I know that that will be the fastest way of getting caught. No, I'm going near his enemies.
Everyone in the pack knows that Alpha Gage wants nothing more than to kill Hendrix. I don’t know the story behind that whole mess but I’m sure as hell as anyone in our pack that Alpha Gage would kill me instantly if he saw me. So, no one from our pack would be crazy enough to go near his pack. And that is why it’s the best way to steer clear of Hendrix. I just have to make sure that Alpha Gage’s pack doesn’t find me too. Killing the Luna of an enemy pack will weaken that pack and I know Alpha Gage would jump at the chance.
I won’t be in their territory but I will be going through the town that is near them and that is dangerous. But that is still hours away.
I see Dayton tossing and turning.
“What’s wrong baby?”
He sighs. “I am too excited. I can’t sleep.”
(It’s the rush. I am tired but I know I wouldn’t be able to sleep either feeling this excitement too.)
I see a fast-food restaurant.
“Are you hungry?”
His eyes shine when he sees Mc Donald's. Hendrix never allowed him to eat anything other than the food from the packhouse. Yea it's healthy but kids need to experience things, even if it’s just once.
I go through the drive-through and order food. I then park and we start eating.
“This is sooooo goooood!” He exaggerates and I giggle.
“Don’t get used to it.” I say.
He smiles and enjoys his food.
When we are done, I put some music on the radio and we head off.
I actually took the long way before we stopped at the first motel, to make them think we were going the safe way. Now we are going the right way.
It’s been almost two hours now and I am starting to get tired. I have one more hour till I can stop.
I continue driving and finally, our next stop comes into view. Another shity motel.
I get a room and we both go in. We both fall asleep immediately. I later wake up to noises outside. A couple arguing.
I hold Dayton tight as he cuddles into me and falls asleep again for a few hours.
“Mom!” Dayton wakes me up, panicking.
“What?!”
“I smell werewolves.” He says looking terrified.
“From the Desert Moon pack?” I ask him. Hendrix pack.
He shakes his head. “No, they are a different pack.”
I calm myself. “Okay. Grab your things.”
I take the dry cedarwood soap and rub it all over me. I do the same with Dayton.
When we are ready, I take a deep breath and open the door. We walk out at a quick pace and get in the car. I turn it on and we take off.
No one seems to come after us so that is a relief but if they catch our scent, they will let Hendrix know.
As we drive, the sun is starting to come out. It makes me feel like I am seeing it for the first time. Yes, we are on the run but I am free of him. A calmness stills inside of me and I smile.
“We’ll be fine.” I say to myself. Mostly because I want to convince myself of that.
Two days pass. Dayton and I don’t stop in one spot for too long. There haven’t been any signs of anyone chasing us. We already made it to where the Blood Stone pack, Alpha Gage’s pack, is situated at. We’ve been driving around it, avoiding them.
I am supposed to wait five days for an informant to get back to me. They will give us a safe trail we can use to get to a personal airport that one of Vera’s contacts owns and get out of the country. At least that’s the plan.
It is about six, almost seven in the afternoon. As I drive, the skies are getting gray and I can see lightning on the horizon. After a few minutes, I stop in a hotel.
We get to the room and Dayton quickly falls asleep.
I know he is so tired. He’s a kid but he has done so good. I am so proud of him.
I look at the damned burner phone that hasn’t rung yet.
“When will that stupid call come?” I am getting irritated.
I wasn’t planning for it to go this long. But no call means that it’s still not safe yet.
I look at my clothes. They are starting to get dirty.
“We are going to have to buy new ones soon.” I mumble.
I go to the bathroom and look in the mirror.
I look tired and I am, but it’s worth it. I wash my face and go back to the room.
I go to the window and I am about to look outside when suddenly, the burner phone rings.
I gasp. I then quickly run and pick it up.
“Hello!”
“Run!” A man’s voice comes through the phone. “They found you! Run! NOW!”
I feel like the world crashes down on me. As if I am someone else in my own body, I grab Dayton and run out of the room with keys in hand. It feels almost surreal.
I get in the car and at that moment, two cars drive in the parking lot and come to an abrupt stop. I floor the gas and go by them, hitting one of them on the side.
I look through the rearview mirror and they take chase after us.
“Dayton put your seatbelt on!”
Dayton does what I tell him to but he is crying. He is scared and so am I.
“Daddy is going to be so angry mommy!” He cries. He’s so scared of him and so am I.
Tears escape me as well but I quickly wipe them away.
If he catches us, I am dead or he’ll keep me alive but I’ll never see Dayton or the light of day ever again.
The car catches up to us and hits us on the back. Dayton screams.
Seeing him in so much distress pisses me off. Not at him of course but at Hendrix’s men. So, I end up doing something stupid. I take a right on one of the backroads. Of course, they follow me. There is no way I can shake them off and I know that. The problem is, the backroads around here run through Alpha Gage’s territory.
(This is a really bad idea.)
I start driving more erratic than I would ever do because I am trying to draw attention to us. I am hoping that werewolves from this territory will see us.
I take a curve really fast and one of the two cars behind us loses control and goes off-road. The other one continues to follow us and it’s right on our tail.
Now I’m going to do another stupid stunt.
“Dayton, do you have your seatbelt on?”
“Y... yes mommy.” He says sobbing.
“Okay. Now listen to me carefully. I need you to put your arms covering your head and brace yourself.”
He doesn't argue and quickly does what I tell him to
I then come to a sudden stop. The car behind us hits us. The airbag deploys before I hit my head on the steering wheel and so does Dayton’s airbag. The car behind us was going at such speed that it lifts and goes over us, landing upside down in front of us, hitting the hood of our car.
“Baby... are you okay?” I ask Dayton.
“Yes.” Dayton says nodding but looking dazed.
I quickly regain my wits.
“Get out.” I say already unbuckling his seatbelt.
I do the same. I can already see movement in the enemy's car.
I go to Dayton’s side, grab his hand and start running.
