Who Is She

***Symphony's P.O.V. *** I checked into my apartment. The landlord, Mr. Young, was a sweet older gentleman. The apartment was furnished, as Mr. Young had told me over the phone. After doing all the paperwork, he left me to get settled. The apartment was a small one-bedroom. It was a lot different than what I had grown accustomed to. I decided I would make the best of it, though. I plopped down in the recliner and tried not to think about the hot biker I had just seen. Port Gibson is a small town; I hope they were passing through. I don't need any complications right now. *** Narrator P.O.V*** Symphony was the director of a large bank for the last five years. She graduated from college early at the age of twenty. Then she spent the next five years working her way to the top. She and Brad had grown very accustomed to a frivolous lifestyle. (They didn't have any kids she was thankful for now, but she had always wanted them.) She had grown up in a small town in West Virginia, living with her single mother. Her father left when she was two years old. She never knew him. Her mother burned everything with him in it, so she didn't even know what he looked like. Her mother worked multiple jobs and worked herself to death. She died at the age of 52. Symphony had been alone since then. Her mother grew up with a single parent who died early as well. So Brad had been her only family up until now. She is alone. She had wanted a better life than what she had grown up with. She went to college and found a great job afterward. She thought Brad was happy. He had a small start-up company building computer spyware. She practically funded it. She paid for at least two yearly vacations, which had been worldwide. Until she walked into the bedroom and saw him with the w***e, she was clueless. She thought they were happy. Who knows how long it was going on? When she was released from jail, there was a camera crew. The local news was reporting the director of First Financial was arrested for domestic violence and assault. She knew she would lose her job because the bank wouldn't want to lose money. Having a director of one of the largest banks negatively reflected on the news was not good for business. Her ten years within the company wouldn't matter. When she made it home, she had 15 missed messages. Some were from Brad, and some from her employer. She called Mr. Douglas, her boss, back immediately. Mr. Douglas answered the phone and let her know she had been terminated. She didn't need to come to get her stuff. It would be delivered. They would also pick up the company car she had been leasing. She told him she understood and wouldn't have expected anything less. Symphony poured herself a cup of wine while she contemplated her next move. There was no way anyone in the banking industry would hire her right now. She had no family, so she couldn't run to them. She decided she would start over. She called a locksmith to come to change the locks. She logged into her and Brad's private accounts and closed them out. The bank would send her a cashier's check. She logged in and turned off all of Brad's credit cards. She had new cards issued to herself and changed the passcodes. She wrote to her friend Nikita, a realtor, and asked how fast she could get her house on the market. Nikita was more than happy to help. Their home was last appraised at 750,000. It was a family home, and she knew families were always looking in her neighborhood. She called the car dealership and told them she would no longer pay for Brad's vehicle. The car was in her name. She told them to activate the G.P.S. and locate it for repossession. She would take a hit on her credit score, but she didn't care. When she and Brad married, the smartest thing she ever did was have him sign a prenup. In the case of infidelity, he got nothing. So her recent arrest may not be in vain after all. She had a savings account overseas Brad wasn't aware of. All of her work bonuses went into the account. So she called her lawyer to get her assets squared away. She wanted this all done in a month. She was leaving and never coming back. She went on the U-hauls website and ordered boxes to be delivered. She also set up a home estate sale on media sites. She was going to sell it all. She went to the living room, waited for the locksmith, and finished off her bottle of Chardonnay. She wasn't using the glass anymore. She was drinking straight from the bottle. *** Brazen P.O.V *** As soon as I walked into the clubhouse, I went straight to my office and called the apartment complex owner. "Mr. Young, did you have a new tenant move in today?" I asked him " Yes, I did, Brazen. She's asked to keep her personal information private, so I don't feel comfortable talking about her. I think she was in some trouble," Mr. Young said, the last part coming out as a whisper, which surprised me because he always talks to me about everyone's business. He was the town gossip. " Mr. Young, I need a first and last name and possibly where she came from. That's it. " I told him very firmly. I am not one to take no for an answer. " I can tell you her first name is Symphony. She didn't want to give a last name. She paid six months' rent in advance, so I didn't ask. She didn't come with much, and I don't know where she came from. " He said. " Symphony like what an orchestra plays," I asked. Mr. Young chuckled, " Yes, it's spelled the same. Look, I don't think she's your type. She seems well put together and wants to start over." I hung up the phone. I didn't ask if she was my type. I already knew she was mine at this point; it's just a matter of her knowing. "Tech! Tech!"get in here! I yelled. "Yes, Sarge," He asked, standing in the door frame. He was about 6'2 and very skinny. He had dreads down his back. He's not tough like the other men, but he's smart. He always smiles, and some days I think we should have named him goofy. He can get past any firewall known to man. He has military experience, but it was behind computers. He is also gay. Not that I care, but he thinks we don't know. Pretty sure he and Vipe have something going on. It's none of my business, though. When I asked my mother if Vipe was gay, she said, " Don't worry about who's climbing in another man's bed. Unless whoever is doing the climbing belongs to you. In which case, you got more problems to worry about than labels." " A new woman came into town today. Her name is Symphony. I don't know her last name. I want you to find as much information as possible about her and report back to me." I said. " Shouldn't take long. She must be a work of art if you're checking her out?." he said I said nothing more and just stared at him blankly. The men know I'm not too fond of chit-chat. Tech left, and I got to work. ***Narrator P.O.V. *** When Brazen was 12, he came home to find his father had died from an overdose of meth. At the time, meth floated around the area, and many locals jumped headfirst. It was so addictive they couldn't walk away. His father, " Dog," was once one of the most respected men in the Black Pistons. When he got hooked on meth, everything changed. He began picking fights and stealing money, and when members found out he was beating his wife, they exiled him. They offered him treatment, and he refused. Two weeks later, he overdosed. Brazens' mother was an angel. Her name was Tracy. She worked hard at Kathy's restaurant until she discovered she had cancer. She left her job to spend time with her boys, friends, and family. While Brazen and his brothers were growing up, Tracy took in any lost child that needed a place to crash for the day or a week. She fed anyone who needed to be fed. She always said Men cant make wise decisions on an empty stomach. Everyone in the neighborhood knew they could go to Tracy's house for dinner on Sundays. She grew a garden, and people always gave her vegetables and food to cook with. She was in stage four lung cancer and died six months later. She had never smoked a day in her life. She had been sick but refused to go to the doctor. When she finally went, it was too late. The town was devastated by her death. She was indeed one of a kind. Her last words to Brazen were, " When you find that special woman, you make sure she knows how special she is each day. Your a man of few words, so if you can't say it, show it." Brazen was convinced he would never find a woman to love and be loved by. That was until he saw Symphony and decided she would be his.
