Chapter 4 James laughed aloud when he received the letter from Sarah. He caught her scent and thought he was imagining it, sweet strawberries and cream wafting across the arid desert night, similar to the way her fruity fragrance hovered in Salem’s salt-sea air. When the mail was delivered James had a letter, and he was embarrassed he had ever doubted her feelings for him. Odd thoughts had crossed his mind since he was incarcerated, and he was thankful for this proof that his Sarah was thinking of him. It was a simple note, not very long, not long enough.
