The Party

“What’s up with you?” James asked me. He was connected to me in a way that only wolves could understand. We would probably die together one day. That’s how close we were. “Sarah’s pregnant,” I said flatly, and told him the whole story. He was probably the only person that would understand everything. He nodded at all the right places and eventually agreed with me, getting rid of that baby was the only thing to do. I knew it wasn’t right, but nothing about that situation was right. “Come on, I know what will take your mind off everything. Sam’s having a party tomorrow night,” he said with that wicked smile of his. Another shiver ran down my spine, ‘I should stay home,’ said that little wolf voice inside my head. On the other hand, getting out and having a drink or two might not be the worst thing. Tomorrow was the last day of school, and we had some vacation time to look forward to. I arrived home an hour before the party started, and I took a quick shower and dressed. I was picking James up on my way to Sam’s house and I felt lonely without James in the house. I was so used to his presence that it felt odd when he wasn’t here. “Going out?” Karani asked me as I walked to the kitchen counter where she sat. “Yeah, Sam’s having a party,” I said as I kissed her cheek. “Keep it in your pants,” she said as I grabbed my keys from the bowl. “Holy sh1t, Mom,” I said and looked at her, stunned. “I’m your mother, Kiran, don’t for one second think that I don’t know you’re sexually active,” she said. “Can we not talk about this,” I said, feeling beyond uncomfortable. “I just want you to be careful, I’m not ready for a pregnant girl to appear on my doorstep,” she said. “I’m leaving now,” I said as she stared at me, her eyes boring into my soul. I drove to James’ house and I kept thinking about what Karani had said. Did she know? She couldn’t know Sarah was pregnant, only three people knew about that. I was pretty sure that if she knew then Malachi would know and there was no chance he’d just leave it. My mood sank further when we arrived at Sam’s house and I stared at the one car I didn’t want to see at the party. I was an assh0le to her and I deserved her hate and I had no idea what kind of hell she’d unleash on me when she saw me. “Damnit, James, Sarah’s here,” I hissed as I pointed to her car among many others at the party. Sam was notoriously well known for his house parties. His parents were filthy rich and away most of the time, leaving him to his own devices. Sam was mostly spoiled rotten, but deep down he was a great guy. “Just ignore her,” James advised, and I agreed to try. We went inside and were swallowed up by the basketball team, a drink was pushed into my hand, and we moved with the throng of people, music blasting all around us. Someone bumped into me from behind, and I turned around to see Sarah. She gave me a look, almost as if she despised me. “I’m not getting rid of it,” she said, as if she was talking about throwing away a piece of paper. “Sarah–” “I’m going to keep the baby. I’ll only tell my parents once it’s too late for them to force me to have an abortion. This happened for a reason.” She looked at me and I could feel that she desperately wanted me to approve of her decision. “Sarah, I can’t be involved with this. You really don’t understand the position you’re putting me in, if you keep this thing…” She pushed me away and walked past me. I realized how aggressive I’d been with her. I had pushed her against the wall and that wasn’t who I was, not at all. I called it a thing because no baby born of a male wolf and a female human could ever be considered normal. It just wasn’t possible, that was if the baby survived the pregnancy. There were so many variables involved that it was completely unpredictable. It just couldn’t be allowed. The odds were no better for the woman, if she survived the pregnancy and made it to the birth. My phone vibrated, and I went outside, it was Malachi on the line. “You missed training this afternoon.” Typical Malachi, no hello. “I’m sorry, James and I went for a run… to clear my head.” Lately that was my go-to excuse. I had been with Jessica. “Where are you?” he asked me as he could hear the music in the background. “We’re at Sam’s house,” I answered, and hoped that he wouldn’t order me home since it was only nine pm. “Okay, we’ll talk when you do get home,” he said and disconnected the call. No goodbye. I smiled as I put my phone away and walked back into Sam’s house. “Superstar! You’re up!” Brett yelled as I joined them at the beer pong table. “Don’t you guys have summer training?” I asked. “You don’t,” Sam said with a grin. “Fine, prepare to get your asses kicked,” I said and took the ping pong ball from Brett. After three games of beer pong, I was a little tipsy to say the least, but we were having fun, and I’d already caught on to Marylin eyeballing me. We had hooked up a few times over the last month and I knew she was game for a good time. “Where are you going?” Sam asked as I headed for the stairs. “I don’t kiss and tell,” I said over my shoulder as he laughed and the guys all made cheering noises. I splashed cold water on my face in the bathroom and rested my head against the cabinet as I took deep breaths. Who was I kidding? I wasn’t even close to being over Sarah and I wished I could change things. If only I had known that this would be the worst night of my life, I would’ve stayed at home.
