The next day, I went to our usual lunch spot. Ishmael smiled in greeting, and opened a Ziploc bag similar to the one I always brought. When I took out my PBJ, I looked over and saw he had one, too. “So, what, you like PBJ’s now?” I asked, one eyebrow raised. “I’ve always liked peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I’d just forgotten how much.” He smiled at me, then took a bite. I did the same. “Sure you did. Is this part of that whole ‘friendship’ thing you’ve started with me?” I asked, my mouth full. “Maybe. Is it working?” I swallowed my food. “Eh, we’ll see.” It was working, but I didn’t want him to know I was that easy. We finished our sandwiches a few minutes later, and I listened to him chew on a Golden Delicious apple while I sipped my water. It was a nice day outside, not too h
