Chapter sixDawes came out of his Master’s room and paused at the top of the stairs. He saw Bolton letting two men into the house. He thought they looked strange, especially one of them and he watched them as they moved across the hall and were shown into the drawing room. Bolton came up the stairs to inform Lady Sedgewyn, who had not yet left her bedroom, that she had visitors. As he reached the top of the stairs, Dawes said to him, “Who are those two men calling in the morning?” “One of them’s a queer-looking monk,” Bolton answered, “and the other looks to me like a ferret.” He walked past Dawes to knock on her Ladyship’s door.
